epididymis

by Paul__0, Jun 29, 1998 12:00AM
I have been experiencing pain in the scrotum on the right side.  No lumps or swelling detected.  Went to my family physician and he diagnosed epididymis.  Prescribed an antibiotic - cipro 500mg.  Have been taking the medication for approximately 5 days and still having pain.  I have also been wearing an athletic supporter for comfort.  Is the medication right or should I call back and ask to try something different?  Boy is this stuff painful!!!!

Dear Paul
Thanks for your question.
A vasectomy precludes you from having bacterial epididymitis if the theory of an descending  infection of the epididymus holds true.  The only way you have bacterial epididymitis is if your vasectomy is no longer stopping the flow of sperm into the ejaculate.  You could possibly have a viral epididymitis but antibiotic will not help.   A varicocele can cause mild chronic pain.  A rare epididymal blow out injury is quite painful and is treated with non steroidal anti-inflamatories like ibuprofen.  This occurs when the epididymis has a build up of pressure and the tubules ruptures releasing the pressure. This is a self limiting process and pain last about a week. I would continue your treatment course and follow-up with your doctor.
