foley catheter question

by SusanHG, Feb 16, 2009 08:53AM
My husband just came home from the hospital (less than one day at home) with a foley catheter. At first, there was just a small amount of urine always present in the tube. After sleeping at night, the tube is now always full of urine. The urine slowly drips into the bag. So the bag is filling, but I'm concerned that the tube is always full. Is this a problem?

Hi,
How are you? Fullness of foley’s catheter tube could be normal, it depends upon the amount of urine excreted and this does vary with day and night. But, it is important to check if the flow of urine is not obstructed while into the bag. Sometimes it can happen so in patient’s with foley’s catheter for longer periods of time that it can get blocked due to sediments in the urine or infections. If the flow of urine is present then the position of foley’s is also right.
If no abnormality found then there is nothing to worry.
Best.
