psa

does diet influence  PSA count? Especialy alcohol in fairly large amonts daily. last december my psa was 2 this year it came back at 10. After a free psa test it came back at 5. In two weeks I have to go for biopsy. I'm alittle bit scared because my father passed away in '97 due to prostate cancer. I was drinking alot daily and not eating right at the time of the psa tests. I have since stopped drinking. My Dr. examinded my prostate and he said that it felt fine. I'm 47 years old and have had yearly screening since '98. The drinking became more heavy this year, so I'm just wondering if it could have anyhting to do with the elevated psa. Thank You.

I am not aware of alcohol affecting the PSA level.  Other than prostate cancer, there are several other diseases that can raise the level - including infection of the prostate, prostate trauma (i.e. after a digital rectal exam or prostatic massage), or inflammation/enlargement of the prostate.

If elevated, the biopsy is a reasonable next step - as you are doing.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
