question about ultrasound and labs for 16 yr old

by mom794, Apr 10, 2008 11:47PM
She's had a UTI of some sort in Jan, Feb, March with wbc's and blood present in urine but she has been clear this month (April) She saw a urologist last week and had CT this week but we don't have the results yet.
She also had a pelvic ultrasound 3 weeks ago which showed an right ovarian cyst 21 x22 x16 mm which was worded confusingly because in one paragraph it said ovarian cyst and another it said renal cyst??? would a renal cyst show on a pelvic US, I wouldn't think they'd go up as high as kidneys!???
Also she had labs which showed her BUN to be 16, range goes up to 19 and creatine was 1.0 which is also toward the top of "normal" range.... is this normal for a 16 year old? are the ranges different for kids? any clarity would be great!  She continues to have ALOT of pain on her right side, that comes and goes but when it's there she's hurting pretty bad, she said today was 7 out of 10 and she's missed atleast 1/2 day of school about once a  week for 3 months due to pain. any input advice would be super! thanks!

Hi,

What units are being used for the BUN and creatinine values? Are these in mmol/L or mg/dl?

I think that ovarian cysts may be likely in your child's case given that a pelvic ultrasound was done and not an abdominal ultrasound. However, a kidney cyst may also be a differential given the presence of WBC and blood in the urine. However, the BUN and creatinine levels appear to be within normal (if in mg/dl) albeit high normal.I suggest that a 24 hour urine protein be derived to quantify urine protein. An abdominal ultrasound of kidneys ,ureters and bladder may be able to rule out an underlying kidney cyst.It is interesting to note that in most cases, kidney cysts may be incidental findings and the individual may actually be asymptomatic.

Has your daughter any problems with her menstrual cycle?

Let us await the results of her CT Scan.An ovarian cyst may require further evaluation and close ultrasonographic monitoring after 2-4 weeks from the first ultrasound.
