the pesky craving

so i have a problem with cravings. i cave. i just can't seem to say no. the hubby always comes home from the store with chocolate, chips and ice cream. my 3 favorite junk foods. any recommendations to avoid the temptation to take the half gallon of ice cream or the bag of chips and eat it all in one night? (of course i don't but i do cave on the cravings)

i do work out. i jog/run for 40 minutes and do the stair stepper for 20 minutes 5 days a week. i'm gonna be adding in body weight exercises those days (and maybe the 2 days i don't jog or stair step) for the extra working out....

well i did REALLY good today. i had a blue berry muffin for breakfast with my tea, oodles noodle soup (i really love that stuff lol) for lunch, a pb and j sandwich after i worked out and then dinner. i'm baking the brownies now (hubby wants them) i wasn't going to eat any but OMG OMG OMG OMG they smell SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. and i did work out hard today. i watched how much i ate. drank all my water. sooooo i could spoil myself just a little bit. so instead of denying myself of all sweets. i'm going to allow myself to have a brownie for doing so good today (and all week actually). it will be my reward. lol.

tomorrow i may work out a bit extra just.....because.

I LOVE Brownies too .. and do realize it can be difficult when requested to prepare those for your husband.

Each time I thought of eating something like brownies .. I had to decide "how much" I really wanted it and this is the thought process I used...

1.  I would read the Cherokee Indian story ... and contemplate the "good wolf" versus "bad wolf" theory.  Many times realizing I wanted to be "GOOD" to me .. I then could leave it alone.  Since I've posted it many times in the community .. you can read it here .. http://www.ranaesheart.com/2008/04/motivation-and-support-keys-to.html

2.  I would review the 2-sided list I made where I listed all the positive things I would gain by losing weight in 1-column and all the things it would cost me in the other column.  For instance .. I would gain being fit enough to play with my grandchildren versus I wouldn't be able to breathe enough to participate in activities with my grandchildren.  This helped me make a positive choice many times.

3.  If I still wanted "the brownies", and sometimes I did .. then I worked to implement a new way of thinking .. called "intuitive eating".  It is where you think about what you are doing and purposefully eat what you are craving, but limit yourself to a small piece.  You allow your knowledge to expand and use some "self-talk" to realize that a true "craving" is satisfied in 3 bites .. anything you eat after that point is for something else.  I began to learn and mentally talk to myself and realize I could have a small piece today ... and then again a small piece two weeks from now.  Nothing said I couldn't have it throughout my life .. I just couldn't over-indulge and eat the whole pan and continue that behavior and reach my goals.

4.  Many times when faced with this choice .. I also had to decide was it "BROWNIES" I had to have or "Chocolate"!   If it was "BROWNIES", the I used the thought process in #3 above.  If it was chocolate .. and many times it was .. then I went and had the chocolate that fit into my lifestyle plan.  Examples are the 35 calories SF fudgesickles, the 70 calorie dark chocolate stick candy or the 60-70-90 calorie SF chocolate pudding.

As for the water .. drinking the water helps fill your tummy because your tummy doesn't know if it's water or food.  There are, also, a lot of filling foods that you can eat in large quantities, which I found helpful when I felt I needed to eat "more" food.  I called them my "hungry" days .. and I would purposefully select lower calorie food that I could eat a lot of.  On my "not so hungry" days, it allowed me to select a smaller amount of higher calorie foods so I did not miss anything I truly wanted.  It's all about planning and allowing yourself the "room" to make choices.

Oh .. and if you choose to eat a brownie .. give yourself permission and don't punish yourself for doing so.  Eat it S-L-O-W-L-Y and truly enjoy it.

Very best wishes ..

i'm still gonna smack dh. he bought a box of brownie mix for me to make. > : o i'm starting to brush my teeth right after eating so i'm not tempted to eat seconds or thirds. as far as the ice cream goes i've been able to resist the temptation. it's hard but i'm doing it. i don't know if i can resist the brownies though. i LOVE brownies. i go gaga over brownies with nuts. *sigh* men are jerks sometimes. i've also been told that drinking 1 or 2 glasses of water 1/2 hour to an hour prior to dinner can help not eat as much as well. has anyone done this? i'm always drinking water but never thought of drinking some before eating. i usually drink it while i eat.

WOWWW .. Absolutely Amazing posts!!!  Such great information and honesty .. thank you ALL for sharing.

I, too, found keeping it out of the house was best, especially those trigger foods .. the ones you dream about and can't stop with a little.  Later, after I had lost 50+ pounds, I was able to bring items I would allow myself to have, but wouldn't go crazy over.  For instance .. I LOVE CHOCOLATE.  From the beginning, I allowed myself Wells Blue Bunny SF Fudgesickles!  35 calories each.  Those could be worked into my meal plans with ease and I still had chocolate.  Later .. I allowed sticks of dark chocolate, 70 calories each, because I could eat just one and leave them alone.  I tried the 100-calorie snack cakes, but found that I over-indulged in them from time to time so I no longer buy them.  Chocolate cake will never be allowed again .. because I simply can't leave it alone with it in front of my face.

Here are a few tricks I implemented and some thoughts that were helpful to me when faced with pesky cravings ...

http://www.ranaesheart.com/2008/05/eating-healthy-or-unhealthy-choice-and.html ... perhaps the "sign" I used may be helpful along with coming back to this forum and posting you need help.

And yes, brushing your teeth works! .. :)

Wishing you much success and sunshine wishes ...

i wanted to smack dh last night. he went to the store to pick up formula and baby food. and a new keyboard (we didn't realize the patio door was open when it was raining when we left, and the computer desk sits right next to it) what does he bring home? peanut butter cup ice cream. yeah.....he KNOWS i love peanut butter cup ice cream (along with rootbeer flavored, strawberry, banana split....lol anything that's ice cream but not chocolate) so what did i do? ate peanut butter cup ice cream. *sigh* men.

i've heard brushing your teeth RIGHT AFTER you eat helps with the eating because then you don't want to eat b/c...well toothpaste makes everything taste like poo. (especially apple juice)

I'm with pinkbelle.  One of the first things I have done this time as opposed to other "tries" is that I let people in my life know what I am trying to do and why.  This is how I have asked for support, most importantly from my husband and son.  All 3 of us LOVE junk food so this is a big thing to ask of them!  On the other hand, this will give us the opportunity to start a new, healthy habit of eating right together.  While they can splurge, I have asked them to support my in my mission by taking into considerations how their  splurging (in my presence) will affect that.  I am just beginning so they might be more resistant in the future but as the saying goes, out of sight, out of mind! if you REALLY have a craving, you might think to just give in sometimes so you dont feel deprived.  Just allow yourself a little!
