When to be concerned about heavy bleeding

I am 47 and do have a fibroid.  As a result I get heavier than usual periods but this time the period came 8 days early and is heavier than any I've had before.  Last night I put in two super plus tampons and wore a maxi overnight pad and in 3 hours had soaked through all.  This morning one super plus tampon and a maxi and soaked in 1.5 hours.  I am very tired and can feel this affecting my iron levels.  When is this an emergency?

If you're soaking this much, you should see your doctor.  Likely you are getting close to going through the change, but I've known friends who experienced this same kind of thing and ended up needing medical intervention, like a hysterectomy.  As scary as that sounds, you really need to see your doctor immediately.  If you can't get an appointment, go into the ER for urgent care.

I take ibuprofen around the clock for my Lupus.  In 3.5 hours I soaked 3 super plus tampons and a maxi.  I'll keep an eye on it and trying to stay off my feet.  I am feeling weak and dizzy.

Oh Trudie, I do hope this problem subsides for you soon.  I read one source that a soaking that occurs every 1/2 hour is an emergency.

Another source said that an effective home remedy are the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Ibuprofen (Advil), and naproxen (Aleve).  Are you able to take any of these?  Some people can and some can't depending on what other medications they are already taking and other health issures.
