ductal papilloma

Since June I have had a mammogram, ultrasound and MRI of a breast after I discovered a brownish/bloody discharge from that nipple upon pressure. There is no cancer or lump to be found, all tests are negative for cancer at this point. I was put on an antibiotic for 10 days. The discharge was still occurring for another week and a half. I was scheduled to see a surgeon in 3 weeks. During that time the discharge has stopped, there is no pain or any outward sign of a problem. Today the surgeon I am seeing said this may be a ductal papilloma and he has scheduled a central ductal excision for later this week. After returning home today I wished I had asked more questions, such as what if I don't have this done right now? I do not want to have unnecessary surgery due to other health concerns, and I am now unsure if this is really necessary since I am not experiencing any problems. I am 54 and I wonder if this has anything to do with going through menopause. Should I wait or go ahead with this surgery? What are the risks of waiting and watching?
