bowel incontinence

Our 7yr old son has been having trouble with messing in his under pants for about 6 to 8 months now. Some days are better with lightly soiled under pants while other days are more severe. He is not complaining about any pain and has not, in the last 3 or 4 months, had any issues with diarrea. He keeps saying he doesnt realize he is doing it. We dont know if this is some sort of phase or something more serious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I wonder if kegal like exercises would be helpful? We definately will take him to a Gastroenterologist if the problem continues.

Thank you for your input. I think having him try and attempt a bowel movement is a good idea.

I can remember when I was 5 years old(I started school the next year)that I soiled my pants in public several times. My Mother had to take me home and clean me and replace the clothes I was wearing. Events like this remain in your memory far too long. The dreams I had when sleeping frequently involved  seeing human waste.

There is a TV commerical for a weight-reducing product that advises persons who take the product to expect anal leakage. Having an extra pair of pants is advised during daily activity. I would quess that the little boy has  a problem with his anal sphincter that may relax too much and cause fecal leakage. It appears that only a gastroenterologist is skilled enough to know how to correct this occurrence.

One thing to try is to make him take time out of whatever he is doing to go to the bathroom every couple of hours.  Even if he says he doesn't need to go to the bathroom, tell him to go sit on the toilet and wait a minute to see if anything comes out.  If this doesn't work, then he should see a doctor to make sure everything medical is okay.
