if you were positive for syphillis  how likely is it that you would be hiv positive ? i just had a rapid test done at 8 weeks after exposure it was negative is that accurate enough? has anyone ever heard of someone testing negative at 8 weeks then positive after? and if she had syphillis and hiv is it more likely i would have only got syphillis or both from a one time insertive exposure?

I understand your fears. However, you have been tested. Tests outweigh symptoms all the time. The doctors on this site frequently suggest 6-8 weeks as conclusive. Some countries and states' public health departments state 6 weeks is conclusive.

If you have a higher risk, I"d test at 12 weeks to confirm. There is no reason you should think that a result at 8 weeks will change. The fact of the matter is that this is an exceedingly rare occurence. It hardly ever happens. Ever.

Your autoimmune disorder, if it indeed does exist, would not hinder your immune response to HIV. I explained why in a previous post.

You keep getting the same answers to your questions. You need to put this out of your mind buddy. I know it's hard, but you have to. Are you hoping to hear a different response from someone else? The fact of the matter is, the chance that you have HIV is very low given your negative at 8 weeks. Nothing you say will change this fact. It doesn't matter.

1. Symptoms are NEVER a good indicator
2. Autoimmune disorders increase false positives, not negatives

Oh, and also, why are you freaking out about ARS???

I just realized, you are talking about symptoms you are experiencing at 8 weeks in...ARS happens at 2-4 weeks... with symptoms resolving themselves in 1-2 weeks. 8 weeks is way too far to be related to HIV. Again... your fears are completely unfounded.

See your doctor about the rash. It most likely (I mean, most most most most) likely isn't related to HIV. I'm not a dermatologist, so neither I nor anyone else on this site can comment on the rash.

You need to stop thinking while you are having an anxiety attack. Think about this objectively. You had a negative result at a time when 98-99% of people would have a negative. Almost everyone tests positive by SIX weeks, your eight week result is highly accurate. I don't understand what part of - DO NOT LOOK AT SYMPTOMS people just don't seem to understand. They are never a good indicator for infection. HIV is not your typical disease that can be identified and diagnosed by looking at a range of symptoms.

It's up to you what you do, but you are wasting your time by freaking out about HIV right now. Hang on for a few weeks to get your confirmatory test. Go see your doctor about your rash. Stop trying to diagnose yourself by looking up information online.

Your fears are completely unfounded. With modern testing, almost everyone is positive by 8 weeks. You should not be expecting anything different from your 12 week test.

Rash can have a billion causes, stop trying to determine whether it is "HIV rash" or not. Your test at 8 weeks is something I would be highly confident in (98-99% accuracy).

You need to get off the internet. You will find whatever you want on it, and are going to pscyh yourself out. You've gotten good advice from everyone, time to try to put HIV off your mind. You really have nothing to worry about. Get your confirmation at 12 weeks (it will be negative).

Also - there is, and I cannot stress this enough, ABSOLUTELY NO POINT in trying to determine whether your symptoms fit those of ARS or not. None. Zero. Zippity doo da day...

So stop. This will only cause you undue grief... for no reason. There are SO MANY OTHER THINGS that can cause the exact same symptoms and are FAR FAR more common. The only reliable indicator of infection is taking an HIV test.

People with autoimmune disorders have a highly reactive immune system. Their immune system is not only attacking pathogens, but is attacking their body's own cells. Accordingly, one would probably expect an increase false positive occurence in these people.

On the other hand, people with severely weakened immune systems (for example, people on immunosuppresants) are more susceptible to a false negative.

i heard autoimmune diorder can give you a false negative? is this true and does a ars rash look like lupus?

There is no difference, except that rapid tests are more prone to false positives. If you test positive on a rapid test, a blood sample must be taken and sent to a lab that can do a re-test, which if that tests positive... will undergo another test to confirm.

Besides that, the tests are almost exactly the same (quality wise).

thanks! that helps a lot! is there a difference between the rapid test that takes 20 minutes by taking your blood compared to the ones they send in the lab? are the rapid ones pretty accurate?

kdn25 - in very few people, it takes longer to serconvert. The vast majority of people will seroconvert by 6 weeks. That being said, if you have had a high risk exposure... it's better to be safe than sorry. In only about 1% of HIV positive people, will it take longer to show up than 8 weeks, so I would not be expecting anything more from your 12 week test. The truth is, scientists are not completely sure what causes the increase in time for seroconversion. Obviously, one set of people are those with weakened immune systems... another theory says that certain things the virus does hinder your immune cells from making antibodies. This is an exceedingly rare occurence, however, and not something to be concerned about.

With modern HIV tests, almost everyone is caught by the 8 week mark.

With an 8 week negative you can forget about HIV, especially with your risks.  Read this response from Dr.H (last para especially):

Dr,
On 28 Dec I had unprotected vaginal sex with a CSW in South Korea. About two weeks later I hd a soe throat and some flu symptoms and went to the doctor to have it checked out. They did a soab check of my throat and told me i had a throat infection. The following week I went to the doctor and had a full std and hiv test done. The only thing that showed up was bacteria on the urine test. Now for the past 2 weeks I have been having symptoms of HIV infection. Im not having any night sweats but have other flu like symptoms and having dry mouth. I also have this dry feeling on the inside of my lips. I have a minor sore throat. Now the thing that really confuses me is I have a spot on my penis. Its not raised or and ulcer its just like a spot the isnt the same skin color. I also have noticted red mole like spots on my arms. I am very stressted out about this and have been told by a number of people that I am causing these syptoms with my own stress. I would like to believe this, but my body just doesnt feel the same. I have been very tired and just dont feel like doing anything for about the past 3 weeks. Can HIV cause dry skin on your penis? I have noticed that I have alot of dry skin on the shaft of my penis right before the head. Also ive noticed a few times in the mornings it looks like a have a dried discharge on the head of my penis?  Any advice dr.?

You can relax.  Despite what you think you have learned by searching the web, your symptoms really don't sound like those of primary HIV infection.  Indeed, they sound pretty much consistent with your friends' conclusion about stess and anxiety as an important component, probably the major one.

If I correctly understand the timing, your negative HIV test was done about 3 weeks after the exposure.  That is too early to be completely reliable, but still pretty reassuring; with standard HIV tests, most newly infected people (probably 80% or so) have positive results by 3 weeks.

No STD causes dry skin or the other things you describe for your penis or elsewhere on your skin.  Neither does HIV.

Now to the one thing that sounds like it could reflect a real problem:  The appearance of "dried discharge" in the morning, as well as the doctor's finding of "bacteria" in your urine, suggest that you might have acquired a urethral infection, such as chlamydia or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) during your encounter in December.  Conceivably it could be gonorrhea, but usually that causes more prominent symptoms than you have.  You should discuss these symtpoms with your provider, and probably should be reexamined, preferably at a time when you haven't urinated for a few hours.

Bottom line:  Get rechecked for the possibility of a urethral infection.  At the same time, have another HIV test for reassurance.  Almost 8 weeks has passed since your exposure and a negative result will prove you didn't catch HIV.  But in the meantime, try not to worry so much.  Almost certainly you don't have HIV, and probably nothing else that will seriously harm your health.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
