question about pain killer addiction

Hi my boyfriend had a surgery on his knee in december he has been taking his pain killers since that time he was first on percoet now for the last month vicidon. To my knowledge he has been taking them as directed and when he goes to physical theraphy. He has seemed fine no mood swings no withdrawel symptoms etc.. When i saw him on Friday he told me he had no more pills left over ( today is tuesday)everything was still fine. until i spoke to him on sunday he was yelling at me telling me he dosen't feel good and does not want to talk to anyone,  So i guess my question is can you see mood swings when someone is withdrawing from medication like this. And is your body physically addicited after taking this type of medication for this long even if its about 2 pills a day? also what other signs  can i look for and how long does this usually last?
thank you

i haven't even said anything about it to him i guess i don't know how to bring it up or what to say about it. The bottom line is that i'm very nervouse to deal with someone like this again.. it seems to me that everyone i know is addicted to something
