6 yr old boy in bad accident

I just found out that a 6 yr old boy who lived down the road from my ex was in a bad accident a month ago. He used to ride the school bus with my 6 yr old before we moved out and my son knew him fairly well. I guess this boy was riding a dirtbike and was doing jumps when he crashed. He severed his liver and just missed the main artery by a couple cm's (would have killed him- bled out). As it is though, he's still very seriously injured, its been over 4 weeks now and he's still in ICU because his liver keeps bleeding, swelling and leaking bile because some of the bile ducts were torn. he's had numerous surgeries and still he's not healing well. I feel so horrible for this little boy and also worried what will happen to him once he recovers- his dad reported that he has been on heavy doses of narcotics for the pain and I keep thinking omg will this poor child suffer horrible WD too when he finally gets well enough to get off of these things? Will he forever be predisposed to opiate cravings when he is older? I sure hope not. I know Im getting way ahead of things worrying about that for this little boy, and I pray he just recovers fully from this horrible accident. School is about ready to start in another 10 days or so, and this poor kid is still in the hospital, spent nearly half his summer vacation in ICU...so sad!  =(  I cant imagine what his parents must be going through either..

PS- i heard that although the family has insurance, the bills are going to astronomical for just the co-pay..hundreds of thousands probably. Im going to find out of anyone in the family is planning to do a fundraiser function of any sort or not. I wonder if I could put together such a thing. Im not very good at orchestrating such things but man, they are gonna need a lot of help!

thanx you guys...he is STILL in the hospital. How long does it normally take for something like this to heal? I thought this long out after an injury..that you either healed or died..  Man that scares me. That poor little boy!

Poor little boy.......sounds like he is a fighter.  The docs will wean him down on the pain meds when it is time.  Keep us posted on how he is doing.........sara

Trouble I am just going to assume that the young lad has no prior history?  Thats a real drag and I feel so badly for the boy ......  but he should be in pretty decent shape in the ICU and all ..... I am pretty ceertain that the Docs would be on the ball in that situation. Only good thing about requiring a hepatologists attention is that those guys are very sharp. The anesthesiologists are very good at juggling the meds around for avoiding that problem. They have learned a great deal in only the last several years.  Will keep the boy in a prayer because thats a bad situation ....... and hopefully he will be back with your guy soon..........I suppose that I was really lucky avoiding a problem like that in my motorcycle days.......
