Dr. Phil - addicted to pills (tmrw)

Just saw the preview for Dr. Phil tomorrow. Its about people addicted to prescription pain pills.  One of the guests actually works for a dr & steals prescription pads to support her habit! That blows my mind! Should be interesting to watch tomorrow...

Common sense says we should all be under a doctors supervision when we detox.  For some there are underlying conditions that dont show up until we do detox.  Coming off the amount of pills most of us took is a danger in itself.  Dr Phil was right in what he said. Some have high blood pressure that hasnt been taken care of and when they come off the pills it spikes and heart attacks and strokes DO happen.  Addiction should never be taken lightly.

As for Dr Phil, he is legit.

"Dr. Phil McGraw is an entertainer, not a therapist. He was schooled and trained as a therapist, just as Fox trash-journalist Geraldo Rivera was trained as a lawyer. Unlike Geraldo, however, Dr. Phil had his professional license taken away from him due to an ethics offense. In 1989, McGraw was ordered by the Texas Board of Examiners of Psychologists to take an ethics class, pass a jurisprudence exam, complete a physical and a psychological evaluation and have his practice supervised for one year in order to regain his license and continue to practice as a therapist. He never completed the conditions imposed by the Board, and is not currently licensed to practice psychology anywhere. Texas lists him as "retired."

When McGraw moved to California and adopted his TV persona, the California Board determined that he was not practicing psychology, but engaging in entertainment. The biography on Dr. Phil's website doesn't say that he is a licensed therapist (it doesn't say that he is not, either); all it says is that he "has a B.A. from Midwestern State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from North Texas State University with a dual area of emphasis in clinical and behavioral medicine." Is he a doctor? Technically yes, because he has a PhD; Geraldo Rivera is also a "doctor" in the same sense, and so am I, because we both have a J.D. degree---a Doctor of Laws. But Dr. Phil is not a licensed doctor, which makes his moniker misleading to his audience and the guests on his show. If you think it would be misleading and ridiculous for Geraldo Rivera to call himself "Dr. Geraldo,' then you should understand why it is ethically objectionable for McGraw to allow himself to be referred to as "Dr. Phil."

'information copied and pasted from the ~Professions and Institutions~ website'.

The guy is a fraud and often shills his quackery as responsible medicine when its really nothing more than saccharine bromides and canned sloganry. I certainly wouldnt allow anyone I cared about to employ his palgiarised therapies as a treatment for addiction.  Anyways, if people are happy to allow an entertainer who hasnt held a medical license in over twenty years advise them of the best course of treatement for their addiction then thats their choice. Personally, I think its irresponsible, not to mention dangerous.

Hi theaddict!  I am ddict3's wife. He showed me your post and had to respond. Dr. Phil is a real doctor. He is not  medical doctor but he is a psychologist with a graduate degree.. He has stated this many times.. If you look at the credits after his show it says Dr. Phillip Mcgraw. You can google him and see this is true. He has his grad professor on his show frequently as one of his advisors. Dr.Phil is 6ft 5 and is not overweight. he is also in his early 60's so he's doing pretty well if you ask me. Also he has to tell people on ntl. tv that they need to be under doctors care if they are withdrawing from ANY medication. He has to cover his a$$ so he doesn't get sued. he could never tell someone to withdraw at home. Common sense. Just wanted to set some things straight.

first of all, we have to look at the facts here. my husband and i watched this show together yesterday and sat together on the couch. what my husband said made a lot of sense.

dr. phil is, well....not a doctor. he doesn't have a degree in anything. he's a man who decided to write a self help book years ago and his fame stemmed from there. nothing more, nothing less.

and yes, the lady on the show did need help - but please keep in mind that this is television. a lot of these things are staged. the only reason i know this is because my friend requested to go on his show YEARS ago, and one of his producers actually called her back and stated what was asked of her - and she would also be given a small fee to reinact certain moments and things.

has anyone noticed that dr. phil is an overweight man that tells america they need to get in shape? just saying.

i agree with the above poster that mentioned that dr. phil should not have stated what he did about she was going to die of a heart attack or stroke if she went CT. there are plenty of members here that are literally living proof that this does not happen. not to mention, medical studies have shown that the only detox that could cause medical harm to you is from benzos as well as alchohol.

again, just saying.

My REAL point was that you cannot deal in absolutes when it comes to human beings.  There is the status quo, and then there are the outliers, but I don't much care for the "experts" who decide their way is the only way..

I'm not a huge fan of Dr Phil either, but I used to watch it on occasion, if I was home sick from work and couldn't find the remote to change the channel☺.

He did a show on alcoholism several years back and had his usual suspects on - the expert psychiatrist, the expert toxicologist, etc.  The psychiatrist's hard and fast point of view was that you absolutely could NOT, EVER stay sober unless you went to AA.  This was brought up at a time when Bush was in his last year or 2 in the white house.

Her claim was that he was going to relapse at ANY time because he never really addressed his drinking problems.  Regardless what you think of Bush or all of the good people of AA, if someone who has been more than 20 years sober ON HIS OWN, I'd say he's doing a pretty good job.

Point being, everyone is different.  AA/NA has been a lifesaver for millions, but not necessarily for everyone.  I can't speak from experience, but I have known at least one heavy drinker who finally had enough and just quit.

I'm biased, I just don't really like him and yes I know he had to say all that but it just seemed a little over the top.

He HAD to say that to cover his ***. Just like shows say "do not attempt to do this blah blah blah." Its so they don't get sued just in CASE if someone quit cold turkey & died then they couldn't sue him. That's all. But as for the show, it was really eye opening for me. It made me so happy that I  quit when I did bc I could have turned into that woman one day.

I watched it also-got some cravings seeing all those pills, that was my doc but will survive. I was a little put off by him saying that you could die and you MUST have medical asst. I know I know that woman did need medical asst and many do need it for under lying medical conditions but not all and for him to use such a blanket statement wasn't very responsible of him.
