Milk shake recipe for cancer patients
A writer and friend of mine has graciously offered this milk shake recipe for patients who need extra calories and have a poor appetite. I think it sounds tasty, however the caffiene content may not be wise for younger children. As always, check with your family doctor before adding any new items to your diet especially while going through cancer treatments.
High Protein/High Calorie Shake Recipe
Mix in a bowl with a whisk (to decrease lumps):
2 scoops of vanilla Mus-L-Blast Body Building Formula
This product can be found at stores like Savon, and GNC. it is packaged in a large 52oz can.
1 can of Ensure Plus, Boost Plus OR Prosure
Prosure is not available in stores. It may be purchased on-line at: https://www.rosstore.com/store.cfm?Department=ensure&Category=Nutrition%20for%20Cancer&Subcategory=&OrderID=0
It is formulated for cancer patients to help build muscle, promote weight gain, and increase strength.
Add:
1-2 tablespoons chocolate sauce
¼ cup decaffeinated espresso or rich, dark coffee
Place in a blender with:
½ cup coffee ice cream
Use Starbuck’s, Haagen-Daz’s, Double Rainbow or other high calorie ice cream. One half cup of these contains 250 calories.
Blend until smooth. Store refrigerated and shake before use.
Notes:
I make 2 shakes at a time in the blender, three times (a total of 6 shakes) and store in the refrigerator to make it easier for me.
Experiment with amounts of coffee and chocolate sauce and types of ice cream. Starbuck’s makes coffee/Carmel, coffee/chocolate chip and coffee/mud pie ice creams.
My friend who started making these shakes says that the coffee/chocolate flavor is the best to cover the unpleasant taste of the ensure/prosure and protein powder. If you do not care for the mocha flavor you might try Strawberry Boost Plus with strawberry jam and ice cream OR vanilla Ensure with peach jam or sauce and peach ice cream. Be creative to adjust to your taste.
Thanks to Theresa Schultz for the recipe. Check out her blog at http://stress-freeparent.blogspot.com
Let me know how it tastes.

However, radiation or chemotherapy can cause nausea and diarrhea and make swallowing or chewing painful. High-calorie, high-protein drinks --- either commercially made or prepared at home --- may help you maintain your weight and lean tissue mass.
Want to get in great shape? Learn more about LIVESTRONG.COM's nutrition and fitness program! Meal Replacements
When you're undergoing cancer treatment, you may find it easier to tolerate small servings of nutrient-rich beverages than large portions of solid foods. Energy-dense meal replacements combine a high number of calories and high protein with a low liquid volume. Look for instant breakfast drinks, liquid meal replacements or clear nutrition supplements that are formulated to promote weight gain. A milkshake made with a packet of instant breakfast mix, whole milk and ice cream has 474 calories and 20 g of protein per serving.
Fruit Smoothies
Radiation treatments to the head and neck can cause mouth pain, throat pain and swallowing or chewing difficulties. Cool smoothies made with sherbet, ice cream, yogurt or frozen fruit may soothe a sore throat while providing extra calories, protein, vitamins and minerals. If you're having trouble digesting dairy products due to lactose intolerance related to antibiotics or radiation, try yogurt or ice cream made with soy, rice, almond or coconut milk. To increase the protein and calories in your smoothies, blend extra egg whites, powdered milk, avocados, wheat germ, peanut butter or cashew nuts with your liquid ingredients. A smoothie made with regular yogurt, whole milk and instant breakfast mix has 400 calories and 19 g of protein per serving.
Protein Shakes
You can supplement your diet with ready-made protein shakes or purchase protein powders to blend into the shakes you prepare at home. Supplements made from soy beans, rice, egg whites or whey -- a milk-based protein -- are the most common protein powders available. In addition to augmenting the calorie content of your drinks, supplemental protein boosts your natural immunity and gives your body the materials it needs to rebuild tissues during cancer treatment. One tbsp. of a milk-based protein powder provides 45 calories and 5 g of protein.
Fortified Milk
To prepare a beverage or cooking ingredient that gives you additional protein, calories and calcium, add 1 cup of powdered nonfat dried milk to 1 qt. of whole or low-fat milk. Blend the mixture well and chill for at least six hours. One cup of fortified milk has 211 calories and 14 g of protein.

Right now I am just still in shock and can not process yet. I have to move my Dad tomorrow and I am going to see if he wants to do ANY THING on a Bucket List..lol
I've been keeping up with your posts.... You're all so close and that's so encouraging right there... Wow, what a safety net to fall back onto...
I can understand the whole "mad at the dr's thing". My anger with the dr's was a big reason I'm here with you now....
They're not God.... Sometimes I think we just expect more from them and are so disappointed when we don't get what we think we're due.... Well, let me say... There are many many doctors who could benefit from a forum just like this. Real life happening, every minute, right now. We put them so far up there, that when they fall, they fall hard. Go ahead and see your Mom's and your Dad's doctors as regular people. One thing I've learned is they don't know everything.... And it seems to me some of them are a little relieved to know we understand that....I'm praying for you and your family. As has been said.... Treasure every minute you get... Make it count
I'm SO SORRY Vic!! please let me know what i can do to help you feel better! my prayers will surely be with you and your family...I know this is unbearable.....just lean on us here....
Where on earth did she find that show?! I remember watching that show when I was little with my grandma. Yes, I'm sure that there is a message there. There are messages everywhere, we just usually aren't listening for them.
