President Bush and the man he is now . . .

I was not able to watch the inauguration today due to work. However, I wanted to watch this historical event and wanted so desperately to see President Bush standing there for the last time as our President.  I don't know why but for some reason I am crying for President Bush today.  I am crying because of how I feel about him.  I feel he is an honorable man who has been given a rough ride by so many who chose not to listen to his words of wisdom.  He did and does love this country - of that I am sure.  Today I was reading some tidbits from Glenn Beck's website and here are some words he wrote yesterday:

Sad, I feel today, and I never saw this coming. If you've listened to this show, you know. Four years ago I was for George W. Bush, and the last four years George Bush has been such an -- he's just been a spur in my boot, if I can quote a cowboy. He's been underneath my saddle and he's been driving me crazy, abandoning the free market system to save it. But today I've looked at him more as a man. And see, the tables are going to be turned on Obama if they don't make him into the monument, and I believe this is why they are making him into the monument. He becomes the president tomorrow and not just a man. Where Bush is no longer the president. He becomes a man. So the reverse happens to President Obama the minute he takes that mantel, and that mantel is lifted from President Bush and people begin to see President Bush as a man, and I wondered to myself, a man who has spent the last seven years really just worried about your safety, my safety, has made the commitment to be the most hated guy in the next 50 years. He's told me that himself: I am prepared to be the most hated man and be maligned for the next 50 years long after I'm dead because I believe this is the right thing to do. For a man who I truly believe. Say what you want about George Bush, and I have said many of those things. The one thing I can never doubt him on is that he cared about our safety. He really did everything he could to keep us safe. He lost sleep because of it. And my first thought when I thought about him today was he can finally rest well because that burden is on someone else's shoulders. And then I thought to myself, you know, will that make him sleep better or worse. Because he knows what's out there and he can no longer help. It has nothing to do with Barack Obama being somebody who wants to keep us safe. It's just who was there on the frontline and now told, "Go home, good friend; your duty is done." Does his burden become greater tonight?

So here's the end of the story. I ask that you say a prayer of thanks for anything that George Bush did do. I ask that you say a prayer of healing for anyone who might feel angry today that they may be their best person possible, and I ask you for a prayer for our president that he may have wisdom and honor. And one last prayer for our Secret Service that they may have vision, they may have vision.

THESE WORDS REALLY STRUCK ME HARD - and I hope we can all PRAY for each other.  Pray for the outgoing President and for our new President.  Pray that our Secret Service protect our new President vigilently.  My heart feels sadness and great joy today.  Sadness that a great man has been ridiculed for caring and for doing what he thought was right and joy for a new generation that can now see we are all equal in the eyes of God but also in our own eyes.  I pray we will all forgive, let go of anger and pray for those who are doing the best they can!!!

Hugs,
Janet

They can also buy potato chips, soda, cakes, etc. with food stamps.  To me, it should be a help to provide nourishment to the family - not luxuries.  Sorry, but that's how I see it.  One time my hubby and I were in a bind financially and our Church helped us.  But, I would never think to have asked for those types of things - I only asked for food that we needed to feed ourselves and my mother, things like meat, bread, veggies and fruits.  The other stuff should not be considered.  Just my two cents.

When I was young, my mother was single with three kids and she was on welfare and received food stamps.  She would buy her Pepsi with it!  UGH!!!  And, you are right Nauty, she could sell her food stamps for cash to get other things.  She used to go to Bingo all the time tryin to win - and yet she spent more money on the game than she did winning!

Anyway, just my two cents!

Please read..New York Times..1999..

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9c0DE7DB153EF933A0575AC0A96F958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=1

By the way, I never said she bought Lottery tickets with a Food Stamp card. That's my point, she had the CASH to pay for lottery tickets because we're paying for her food. And, I never get mad over civilized debate. As long as it's backed up by facts. I'd like to see your source for the 700,000 people killed. I think that's grossly overrated. My numbers say around 90,000 or so. In contrast, 195,000 people die every year in the US due to avoidable medical errors in our hospitals each year.

Allaboutmary...Unemployment rates during the Great Depression was 23.6 percent. Twice what it is now. It was also near 10 percent in 1982...before Reagan's Supply Side economics took hold and turned the economy around.

Well said Sterling !

Also I would like to say.........Myself and both my sister's are 3 of those people losing their homes.  None of our houses are huge mansions !  We could afford our homes until we all lost our jobs ! I have a 2 bedroom 2 bath home. Yes, some people over spent on their houses. They were told by the mortgage companies that they could refinance in 2 years and get 30 yr fixed. They were told their houses would be worth so much more.NOT. We all had 30 year fixed with excellent interest rates. My sister that worked for an insurance company as a supervisor is now washing windows to feed her son. Magi and I went from being booked 6 months in advance for 10 years to only 1 phone call in  3 months. Did we think the local unemployment was going to go to over 11%. Which, I believe is close to depression numbers. What did we do wrong ? We worked hard we paid our bills. I'm guessing that about 3% of foreclosed homes are on people that were greedy and couldn't afford their homes. The rest are like us.
WE ACTUALLY CONSIDER OURSELFS LUCKY ! We have a close family and have found a solution to our problem. We are surrounded by friends and elderly that are not as lucky as us.  What are those people going to do ?
Are we responsible for the mortgage companies that chopped up our mortgages and sold them and made tons of money ! Is it our fault the CEO's filled their pockets while paying their secretary's little over min. wage.
This country has been raped by big business and George Bush sat back and watched !
I am so glad to have a President now  that will look after the hard working middle class. President Obama doesn't want to give hand-outs. I have no idea why people think he does ?  He wants people to have jobs and affordable health care.  How can you be against that ?

Ga Guy. You are one of my Fav. people on this forum. You helped me very much. You helped me get through my cold turkey almost 600 days ago. So, please don't get upset with me. I just want to get some facts straight.  How in the world can you blame the housing mess On Clinton? Yes, he was in favor of getting more people to own houses.BUT, It was Phill Grahm (spl) who sponsored the deregulation of the financial markets in 2001, on G. Bushes watch. This is a speech Bush gave in 2002 about minorities being able to buy as nice a home as he has.(yes, he said it) Read the whole speech. http://isteve.blogspot.com/2008/09/2002-bushs-speech-to-white-house.html
This got the ball rolling. After the collapse, George Bush and his administration begged congress to give wall street and the financial markets 850 billion dollars of your money. You are so worried about giving a poor lady some food stamps, but no problem giving millionaires billions of dollars.
BTW, you can,t buy lotto tickets, cigs or alcohol with food stamps or those welfare cards.
Last debate: Oh Boy, thats one hell of a Democracy they have over there in Iraq. We killed over 700,000 people in Iraq. Millions of citizens were forced to flee their country, and they can't go home. We are spending billions of your tax dollars to rebuild what George Bush blew up, instead of spending it on our own country.

I am so happy Bush is out of office. All the people that died because of him are still dead. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Invading Iraq is the biggest blunder in the history of our country. Today's reason for invading is,  Sadamm killed his own people with the chemicals he bought from the USA.
Bush and Chaney trampled on the Constitution. They broke laws. They outed a CIA agent. They ran the Justice Department like it was a campaign office. They will be lucky if they can travel to other Countries. They will be lucky if Obama doesn't start investigations. If he does, they will end up in jail.

Nothing is ever Bill Clinton's fault. Bush is faulted for every wrong thing that happens in the world. And, I am so tired of hearing about WMD's I could scream. You know, I might be simple minded about democracy...but, I think...in the long term, democracy breeds peace. Saddam Hussein kills thousands of people and people turn a blind eye. It's being done now in Darfur and half of Hollywood is over there wondering why we don't intervene. Regardless of the motives, we've brought democracy into a middle eastern country that was under the thumb of a ruthless dictator. I can only imagine the excitement some of these people have knowing that their children have an opportunity to grow up and say what they want without fear that they will be jailed and beaten for the rest of their lives. It must be a feeling much like our forefathers in this country felt as they fought for our freedom. The world community hates our guts, but never fail to extend their hands looking to take our money or help. We are the last of the great super powers, and with that comes a lot of responsibility. Spreading democracy when and where we can is the best way we can preserve the legacy of the brave men of our American Revolution. I'm just glad that France didn't worry about the costs when they came to our aid in the Revolutionary war...just as most of Europe is glad the United States came to their aid in World War II. People talk of September 11th like it was yesterday, yet they have already forgotten. The flags that were in every window are down now. You don't see people wearing red, white, and blue all the time any more. Say what you will about George Bush...but, I woke every morning and expected some sort of terrorist attack to come again. It never came. He stood by his convictions and did what he thought was right. I will always respect anyone who stands by their convictions. I disagree with many of Barak Obama's policies, yet I will always stand by him because he is my President. He seems to be a man of honor and a man of God. I think he has 100 times the moral character of Bill Clinton (I have not, nor never will, respect any man that will cheat on his wife. To cheat on his wife is one thing, to do it in the Oval Office, a place revered for its symbolism, is an offense I will never forgive. I think it was an ultimate insult to this country.). I truly hopes he does a fantastic job as President, and he's always in my prayers.

I really dont want to debate this, but   here I go again!   The mortagage fiasco did not happen on Clinton's watch.....  these were short term 3 to 5 year ARMs       Bush was in office for 8 years    The ease of the loans was based strictly on dereg of the financial institutions....     You truly dont think deregulation hurt the airlines  the banks  communications     that surprises me.

There were  "weapons of mass distruction" found in Iraq",????  my god  even Bush  and Cheney  and Rumsfeld admitted they or the US  or the CIA  did NOT find any WMD's
and stated on record  it was a big mistake   or "miscommunication"......long after the fact     (you and me  are paying a billion dollars a month for this war)

I am sorry for arguing with any of you over this.  All I want is to get our lives out of this financial turmoil that absolutely scares the hell out of me.

It was, and never will be from a "lack" of regulation. It was because of an overabundance of it. Bill Clinton wanted every person in this country to own a home, whether they deserved it and could pay for it or not. Along with Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, he convinced Federal Regulators to slacken credit lending practices through federally insured loans through Freddie and Fannie. Banks literally had their arms twisted to make many of these loans by being told that their licenses would be restricted if they didn't. It was Federal Regulations that made all of these loans possible. Do you actually think these loans would have been made if they weren't Federally guaranteed? Of course they wouldn't. Banks don't want to foreclose on property any more that the people want to be foreclosed on. The economy will rebound, it always does. The government just needs to get its nose out of things and let free market economics take charge. Some of these companies NEED to fail. It's the way the system works. If they are not making a profit, then they need to change the way they do business. Taking the tax burden off of corporations as the Fair Tax does would be the first step.

I can't imagine anyone wanting Obama to fail......that's insane.  If he fails .....we lose!!

Mortgage companies are not completely at fault.  I find it difficult to feel sorry for the greed home buyers ....come on!!   of, course you don't want see families lose their homes, but on the same token.......they will be where they belong, In apartments renting like they should have been.  Shame on the loaners, cause like you said......they are walking away from their crimes.

I pity anyone who has to try to figure out this mess, but you can't overlook the War....that is weapon of mass destruction that we found, and are having to deal with here at home........funny if we just would have looked in our own backyard first.  Surpirse..........

Call me silly,  and I am at the 34% tax bracket,  but  whatever person was in front of you paying with food stamps  really has nothing to do with the economic turmoil of where the US is at this point and time.   Quite frankly nor does the mortgage fiasco that has caused so much dither  relate to the monies  I and many Americans  have lost in the last year.  The lack of regulation is what has caused the mortgage and finacial institutions to go belly up........  it is so basic,  Economics 101    but I guess  that is what keeps the government going,   assumptions and complete ignorance of where tax dollars are being spent.    The banking institutions made bazillions off those flaky loans,  and then when it got tough  bailed  with golden parachutes,  the execs  and stock holders made a whole of money    and great benefits (hence the fraud cases )  than the poor folk trying to stretch into the American dream.    I cant tell you what is like to NOT be able to afford a house   a home that you buy   because I always have,  I can only imagine the people that hold that dream and have every bank calling  and telling them that it is affordable and they can buy their dream.  Ignorant.....  yeah to me a bit  because I have never had anything less than a 15 yr fixed mortgage,  but  not sure that is the standard.

Our entire economic mess is so complex    and I dont think Obama  or   McCain   or  Bush III  can/could solve it in a year or two        Quite frankly  all I want is for America to get off of the "it's not my problem"      or  "I want him (the celebrity Obama) to fail " and realize  if our Administration now fails  any more so than the previous one  we are in a world of hurt........

Yes, I was referring to the entire bush family and their experience in politics in general.

You are insane to think that Obama's camp. funds.....were funded with 25 dollar donations.......The fact is.......he is Hollywoods President.  Highly funded by Celebs.  which is not uncommon ..but extraordinary in his case.  When I said some of the celeb/black statement I made......I wish I could take that back, but It was just the Obama/Oprah connection that really irritated me.  I love Opy for the good she has done but she is so bloody full of herself she is going to explode at some point.  I mean if Oprah told us all to eat dog **** cause she does......there would be no dogs in shelters.......lol......ok, I'm using Marys defense.....Overtired and too much Java............I'm zippin it !!

I sincerely hope that Barak Obama is able to do 10 percent of what this country expects him to do. It amazes me at the ignorance some people have when it comes to the President in general. People complained about Bush's reckless spending of money, yet nothing is being said about Obama's 1 TRILLION dollar bailout deal. I heard some lady on the news saying it was going to be great when Obama got into office because she didn't have to worry about paying her mortgage, for gas, or groceries. Basically, I am just so freaking tired of people around this country walking around with their hands out expecting entitlements. I work my tail off every single day and get the opportunity to pay taxes at a rate of 28 percent along with the amazing AMT tax. Meanwhile, people are getting MY money through Earned Income Tax Credits. A lady in front of me at a convenience store bought 20 bucks worth of junk food and 30 dollars worth of Cash 3 Lottery tickets. I nearly blew my top at that one. I have no problem with my tax money being used to help someone down on their luck, but I'm tired of it being used so people can simply slum life away as they cash checks funded by my money. There's a way to solve this economic downturn in months and stimulate the economy all at the same time. It's called The Fair Tax. It would be an economic boom to this country, but doesn't have a chance now that our government has floated so far to the Socialist left. And, just as an aside..I'm not some Republican nut. I'm a conservative, but I didn't vote for McCain either.

I had a post removed once too and it was immediate and I never understood why!  I agree about wasting time with bigots.  It bothers me too.  I have friends who have adopted children of different races and grew up in a diverse area of Pennsylvania - across the bridge from Trenton, NJ and had friends of every religion and race.  I'm always amazed at the bigotry.  But, I do become concerned when I see people using race to get what they want - whether it's for or against a race - if you know what I mean.

LOL!!!  Get back to painting!  I love your paintings that you've shared.

Thanks - I am feeling better, just tired and achy!  ICK!!!!

Love ya,

HelpinUtah, No, I don't think you  reported me, lol, I didn't mean to sound like I was saying that. Just the other day (don't remember what post)on a political post, all I typed in was..."Truth" and a web site...and bamm, it was gone. There was nothing wrong with the web site, so maybe some one behind the MH scenes just doesn't like me. lol
And I don't hold anything against anyone for their political views. But I won't waste my time talking with bigots, which doesn't include anyone in this thread (to my knowledge), but have come across 1 or 2 around here.   I think I'm babbling, I'm so tired and need to get back to painting.  Must drink more coffee.
Hope you're feeling better.

I respect your opinions (you know that), but my take on the "decades of experience" mentioned is not just President Bush, but his whole family.  I watched a documentary on PBS about many of our presidents and one who was highlighted was George H.W. Bush and his experience as well as his father's (President Bush's grandfather) political experience as a Senator for 10 years.  That family has served this country diligently and to the best of their abilities. I was struck by the integrity that the family has shown over the decades. President Bush grew up in a family that chose public service for a long time.  I hope everyone is able to watch that someday - it really helped me see things a lot differently about all our presidents, even those I did not think highly of prior.

It definitely is a thankless job!  I can't imagine anyone actually choosing that - so in my mind they are really trying to do what's best for us all.  I like to think that we all would try to do the best we could given certain circumstances.

I do pray and hope President Obama will be successful - not for him, but for all of us counting on him to come through for the Country!  I also want him to be safe and his family as well!

I'm sorry, I think I am in dire need of a history lesson.    "Bush's decades of experience"  and that was what?   I know he was Governor of Texas   and was born with a silver spoon in his mouth that got him into the Ivy League and out of Viet Nam,   guess I am drawing a blank on his decades of  political experience and leadership.

Hollywood's president.......some of the richest celebs are black????!!!   That literally made my head spin for so many reasons.    The rules for campaign contrbutions  while running for office are  pretty  (as you would say) black and white.   Aproximately 90% of Pres. Obama's donor's did so in amounts of $25 or less, all of this information is readily available for anyone to read,  if you truly have a concern  about campaign contributions. If Obama is Hollywood's president,  I can't imagine what tittle we should give President Reagan!!

I would not "boo" Geo W Bush, but I do celebrate the end of an Administration that took a huge budget surplus and in 8 years left our economy TRILLIONS of dollars in debt, started a war in Iraq which had nothing to do with 9/11, vilolated and ignored the Constition, alientated most of the world with arrogance and stubborn assumptions, trampled civil liberties (even those of  white folks), I could go on for pages, but it truly doesn't matter my opinion of the past......   Does anyone ever read about Saudia Arabia and the Bush connection,  or how much of America is now owned by other countries, or the amount of debt the US now owes to other nations?      Or about the world banking order and how that impacts our economy and serivces/goods?

For those that hope Pres Obama fails,  I pray to God you have a huge trust fund that you have in gold, your home(s) paid for, medical and dental insurance for life, your own army patrolling you on your secluded island.....   because we will all need those things, if our country can't turn this horrid mess around,  and do it soon.

It is time for me to stop the blame game  and get on with life,   but we need a lot of work to regain  life as I once knew it to be.

What are the qualifications for running a Country.  We can only pick and hope.  I think Hillary should have been given a chance, and would probably do a better job than Obama, but yet......lets give him a chance.  We have a tendency to choose experience which he has none, but you never know?........its a crappy shoot and we could get lucky.........i hope so.
