Our First President was an Addict

You'd be surprised of the things you learn. While making my second video, this one on George Washington (link in my journal);

I came across this curious fact:

Because of metal poisoning (so they guess) George Washington lost all his teeth by the time he was about 40.

The dentures he wore caused him a great deal of pain, and as a result he was a regular, daily user of laudanum until the day he died, the then equivalent of today's opium.

So consider this the next time you're down on yourself... that even one of the greatest, most well known Americans ever was also an addict. :-)

I would gather that many of our presidents had some sort of addiction or other. Remember, that until the temperance movement began in 1879, alcoholism wasn't even considered an issue. And it was some 30 to fifty years until it took hold with enough strength that it led to the failed prohibition in the 1920's.

So alcohol wasn't really considered a health issue until the 1900's. Actually, it's a fascinating bit of history, with the then Dem's and Repub's choosing up sides (The heavily Catholic/Irish/German Dem party was anti-temperance, with the then Repub's being pro) it made for one of the hugest political issues of it's day. It made for some intense politics.
I could go on about the intricacies of the whole thing, but what a historian buff finds interesting others tend to get glazed eyes over.

Naughty, the nail polish remover worked! I got it off the screen totally. I was worried having to wait 8 hours would make it bond to strongly, but it wasn't a problem.

Oh, and the videos are videos that debunk attempts by a group of youtubers who have taken up revisionist American history.

It's a pet peeve of mine (revisionist historians). I won't go into detail here as it attaches to what is becoming a hot political issue in today's America and we have a "no politics allowed" rule on the forums.... if you want to see, just follow the link in the journal. :-)

I use many lolcat, fail pictures, and amusing cartoons to give it a fun edge.

Baron,

That office has been the home of many addicts throughout history.
Kennedy , Truman, Clinton, not all but more than we really acknowledge.

Many prominent leaders in this country have had or do have substance abuse issues.
Who knows, someone we know might be president one day!
