the sad road of addiction

I ran into an old pill buddy the other day. She told me about another person who I worked with for awhile. We'll call her Sara. Sara and my wife met about ten years ago. Sara was pregnant and single.
She told us about her past and using but was clean so far while being pregnant. She told my wife she was gonna stay clean and raise her kid. Fast fwd to two days after having the baby and she's already out drinking and partying. My wife stopped hanging out with her.
Several years later I ran into Sara again, working with her. At this point I was starting to enjoy pills too. I saw her struggle after I quit the first time. She tried methadone but it didn't work. She wanted to party. Her daughter was legally signed over to her parents by then too.
So several days ago I learned she had another baby but gave it up for adoption. The child was born premature and addicted to opiates.
Her friend told me Sara had stated she would quit shortly before birth. That to me shows the power of addiction!
It's scary!  I did some stupid stuff while using too.
I hope someday she will get it together. She is a nice person. But I'm afraid I'll hear that she like so many others died premature.

Imagine that child's world & how he'll view the future someday...a world he was so unfairly thrust into without any regard for that first free breath he deserved....a world of addiction & despair stolen from the birth rite of innocence! All we can do is hope that child gets the chance to live as protected and uninhibited as a child should! And maybe someday his birth mother will find her motherly love for her children & they'll understand the depths of her disease! Makes you grateful for the victory's we discovered through recovery! And the children who haven't been touched by this tragic beginning!

This is such a sad story. People stuck in the hell of addiction will give up just about anything to be with their vice. I am so glad that we all have made it out of that and are now working on our recovery. It's good to have reminders like this every once in a while. Reality checks. Reminds us we never want to go back to that dark place again. Thank you for sharing that. I'm sorry about your friend. I hope she can find her way before it's too late.
