I am 10 years clean, addicted to IV demerol. 1st rehab I left because of "my children" (HA, like I was being such a great parent.....NOT) . started going to NA and white-nuckled it for a year until I relapsed and finally did what I needed to do for me...went to rehab and did WHATEVER they suggested. Kids survived better knowing they were going to get their real mom back. I took care of myself so I could finally be the mother my kids deserved.
I could not have survived the cravings without my meetings and the people who held my hand and let me call at all hours.
Like a total nitwit, I started smoking cigarettes(substitute addiction). Well, I finally started to take the new drug Chantix cause I COULD NOT STOP SMOKING no matter how hard I tried. After 4 days I swear......I had no cravings, no desire to smoke. I HEARD, it is being investigated as a med to be used for ALL addiction/cravings. I don't know anyone who used it to stop smoking while in early recovery, OR what the contraindications are. Just thought I'd mention it.
Cravings last for a few minutes. Pick up the phone, dark choc, like GTMI said works in the same area of the brain as some pretty strong addictive substances.
Cravings can be triggered by 'People-Places-Things' in your addiction. Avoid all you can. You are not alone!!!!
I believe there is a post on cravings in the Health Pages. Another really god tool is to keep posting. I think we all felt like we were over-posting but it really does help you.
Just keep hanging on. You will get through this.
i was in detox 8 days i went to rehab for 4 days i left (have 3 kids) i didnt expect detox to be 8 days. i have been off methadone for 1 week. i was on it for 1 week. i tried MANY times and finally had to go away but i just cant stop craving. thanks for the tips i will def. try the choc.
It does take time, and it does get better. Cathy is so right.
Detox, then rehab, when did you last take methadone? Since it stays in your body a lot longer than percs. Your cravings may linger for a while. I used a piece or two of dark chocolate when I craved. It has to be at least 70% cocoa to work right. Another thing that can help is an amino acid L-Glutamine. In fact, you should be taking lots of vitamins and supplements at least 2x/day if you aren't already. Proper diet and nutrition is key to recovery.
congrats on your 13 days. it takes awhile before your brain gets over these dang pills. i have a journal entry on time if you get a minute to read it. one thing is for sure, i DOES get better.
