Couldn't have said it any better than Weaver!
Detox is the primary stage of recovery, aftercare are the activities one does to develop coping skills, non-addict thinking, and emotional/spiritual maturity, for the rest of ones life. The activities, like those mentioned above, can change, but I believe we all need to keep improving to stay sober. I consider the gym my physical aftercare, therapy is my mind's aftercare, and working with a group to become more sustainable is my spiritual aftercare. CBT is my main emotional aftercare. So, to me, aftercare is what we do to grow and care for ourself, after we detox from drugs. I started my routine before I quit, due to so many failed attempts in my past. What do you think woukd inspire you to be the best you there is? Church? NA? Therapy? It doesn't matter what inspires us to keep growing and being better and better, but Ido think there really needs to be something, if not lots of things, as in my case. Now, my aftercare is a way of life, not something I do outside my normal life. Take care of yourself and never stop growing, aftercare is what inspires us to stay the coarse. For the example, I have made such a better life for myself, I wouldn't want to jeopardize the life I have by using drugs. Even on a bad day, I'd rather call a friend or my therapist, because life is finally good, after years of working to find this new me.
AA, NA, outpatient care, therapy, group therapy......
