I asked my pharmacist that same question once...dependent versus addicted.  He said dependent is a physical need for the pain medication but not addicted because the brain chemistry has not changed as of yet, no cravings and supposedly a lot less issues stopping the medication.

Now mind you...that's what the pharmacist said...I'm not sure I agree.

I was dependent for years...I needed the meds...when I ran out I rarely had withdrawals...I would sleep for a day I would be find.  When I started doing stuff like taking more than prescribed, craving the meds etc...well that's when I would start getting sick if I ran out.

Oh yeah, one time pharmacist told my hubby you are not an addict you are just medically addicted (huh????)

It all amounts to the same thing to me...a dependency on any drug, tobacco, alcohol kinda sounds like addiction to me!

I do not know what methadone dose you were on, but 10mgs is probably too much. 8mgs held my 250mg methadone addiction just fine, just as an example. Personally, I would rather go with a low dose of bupe than benzo's, like Valium. That is just me though. Being that most people have about a 90 day recovery from methadone and you are not an addict, you may be taking the Valium for awhile. The only detox worse than methadone is benzo's. Just some things to consider. Since you are not an addict, the threat of trading one addiction for another is not as large of a concern.

How are you now? Are you going to the nursing home?

The clonindine and the Valium will help with the anxiety. The methadone is leaving your system. You will start to feel better. Hold tight. It is almost over.
You are doing great. I am happy you are still there.
Sending prayers, Debbie

Hi all. Just joining up. Hope to learn, teach and offer support. 42yrs old NYer who got absolutely blown away with Oxycontin in early/mid-ninteys after getting this "New" pain meds for back problems following a prosperous collage football career. Started with the 80's, never thought I was dancing with the devil. Those Oxys Rocked My World. Nothing else in the world gives you that taste, just like the smell of napalm in the morning. I now find myself here 20-25 years later, after 2 main detoxs, years of staying clean, success with Da Subz and after a 6month binge of H, hitting Subs once again because I hate myself for what I've become......Oh, the pwds are a nightmare.

Methadone detox hit the highest point for me at 7 days, many on lower doses than me say it was 5 days, which is the amount of time it takes for all the methadone to leave your body. I am surprised they want to send you home so soon, while there is still methadone in your system. It sounds as if you are not going with the dupe, are you taking anything to help with symptoms?

The dupe patches are very low mgs, so you likely didn't have much in your system when they removed it. What mg patch was it? How many mgs of methadone where you taking? I don't think you were off the methadone long enough to use the dupe, so it is good you had them take it off. Bupe, subutex or suboxone will cause precipitated withdrawals, if you still have too much other opioids or opiate in your system.

I would try to stay there as long as you can, methadone detox goes in waves. It will feel as if you are feeling better, then be back in it again. Hang in there, every minute you are getting closer.

just having the bup patch on for a couple of hours won't really effect you.  methodone withdrawals take awhile to really kick in, so maybe that made your withdra.wals a little worse?  i don't know if that only happens with the suboxone that has 2 meds in it or not.

you are likely just feeling the withdrawal from the methodone.
are they giving you anti nausea meds in your iv???

you should be just fine.  i would be angry though.

i have pneumonia in both lungs right now and honestly i would rather be going through detox.
just like there is not much i can do right now to make it go away faster or feel better (nothing is working) there is not really much you can do either but wait it out,

like i said it is 2/3 mental.  convince yourself you are just sick with the flu and will feel better as it runs it course,

you made the right decision.  if your goal is to be off all meds, then best not to transfer the med from one to another.
methodone and suboxone withdrawals are both long.

we have several people who have done it and you can too.
if they let you stay another day or 2 then that will help you. make sure they give you anything they can to make it more comfortable for you,

the oxycodone is helping you more than you know right now.  just make sure you don't take that for long.

the worst should be - no sleep, restlessness, RLS, anxiety, nausea, no appetite, no energy

withdrawal from methodone won't kill you, it is just extremely uncomfortable.
try not to worry too much about them.  everyone is so different.  i have read horror stories and i have read where people had a very easy, short detox,

since it is 2/3 mental, try to stay positive.  watch funny movies or videos. listen to music as loud as you can (headphones).  both release natural feel good chemicals. so does exercise, but you may not be up to that right now.

STAY HYDRATED.  if you get dehydrated you will feel 100 times worse.

So explain to me what's the difference of dependent and addicted?  Maybe I'm confused? If your body requires a med or drug to function, what's the difference?  TOTALLY NOT BEING SARCASTIC....would like to know for future reference?  I don't truly understand this?

@ motye51. --lily is dependent not addicted. Much differe t.

@lily subutex has only one component.
Hun try not to anticipate or fear the withdrawal.
It is different this time you are being medically supervised.
The clonindine Will help alot.
Keep the faith.
Stay encouraged.
You will get through this.
Hugs,
Debbie

Don't be scared!  You will get through this and when you come out on the other end, you'll get your life back!  I assure you this is doable!  Being that your in a hospital setting, I would think that they (as medical professionals) can make you as comfortable as possible while you go through this.  I detoxed off of subs and I found that I had to look deep inside of me, for a strength that I always knew I had, but I NEVER used!  You have it, we all do.  Just be done with this crap!  On the subs, it took about day 2/3 for real w/d to kick in and YES, it sucked ***!!!!  Not going to lie....but you will come out on the other end....a bit rough around the edges, but out!  Then, and this so far has been quite a blessing....you will get to learn who you are again!  Because we forget!  The drugs numb us....I'll take feeling any day of the week!
