Can you wean off Xanax? .05mg per day for 15 years

I want to quit taking Xanax, I only take it at night for sleep but I lost my health insurance and need to quit taking it. I don't think it works so well for sleep anyway. I have starting taking melatonin and am staring on L Theanine for sleep. Anyone quit on there own?

Thanks, I have thought about tapering by cutting it in half and taking melatonin or other sleep aids. I hope I can do it! I read xanax has a short half life and that is why it is hard to stop.

Has anyone on this post stopped by tapering instead of taking other drugs in the place of xanax?

Hi~  You need to taper off of xanax for a while especially since you've taken it for so long long.  Ask your doctor for a taper plan. We really can't give you one on the forum. But,it's not a large dose and wouldn't be hard to just start cutting back.  You can break the .5 in half and take that for awhile then break it in half a gain. It could be done over weeks.

You should tell your doc who prescribes it that you want to stop, so he can get you on a taper.  You are not on a high dose, but the 15 years is a lot of time, so you will need medical supervision in my opinion!

Good luck! : )
