Coming off codeine

I have been on codeine 30mg x 14 daily for 8 years now. I have been sent to a specialist drug clinic to help come off them. I start cold turkey this sunday. They have given me sickness drugs, drugs to lower my heart rate, diazepam to relax and temazapam to sleep also something for the runs. I have been told to expect hell for 48-72 hours. Can anyone comfirm or deny this?

hi, i also came off codeine, but without the drug clinic, i did it cold turkey also, it was hard but i got through it, and it is such a relief to be free of them, i dont think it will be too horrendous for you, with the help you will be getting from the clinic i would think you will be very drowsy for a while. i wish you well, god bless.

I believe your physical withdrawals will probably be at it's worst on your third/start of fourth day.  You should start feeling better after about five days. Thats the physical withdrawal though, which for me is the easy part.  The mental withdrawal aspect of it will last much longer because even though you will feel fine physically, mentally you're brain will be telling you that you want some codeine.

ALSO, Pleae be very careful with the valium (diazepam) and restoril that you were given.  Both are benzos, and trust me you don't want to get yourself hooked on those, worst withdrawals ever.  I would just take the valium during the day while going through the worst part of detox and take the restoril at night about an hour before you want to go to sleep, and maybe add a tylenol pm in there as well. I don't know if you have a months worth of the valium and restoril, but if i were you, from my own personal experience, I wouldn't take them for more than a week to ten days at the most because you become dependent on these drugs quickly. I believe the time frame typically for someone to be on a benzo is two weeks and thats it.  Good luck to you, and you can do this.

i was taking co-codamol in shape or form for four years, tried to give up several times, but about 3 and weeks ago something in knew this was the end if i didnt stop. days 3 and 4 are awful, i wont lie to you, i did it completely CT , the only thing i have taken are vitamins, something for the runs, and a herbal remedy to help me sleep.
It gets better and easier everyday, the main thing for me was being free from the slavery of it, the horrible things controlled my life. Im nearly a month in and mentally im stronger than i have been in years, still get the runs every now and then but overall it gets better.
just remember why you are doing this.

Hi...it's different for everyone. It won't be pleasant but it will be doable with the meds you have. Take everything as ordered. Drink lots of fluids and be sure to eat well.  With those meds on board, you'll probably sleep right through it!!

Good luck!
