I'm dealing with my own cravings right now as I wean myself off pain killers. (see my thread about weaning myself off Hydrocodone) I remember when I was weaning myself off cigarettes, which was just as bad as what I'm going through now with my addiction to narcotic pain killers, I used to take Silly Putty and manipulate it in my hands. It helped keep my hands busy since they were so used to holding a cigarette. Now that I remember that experinece, I bet some Silly Putty isn't a bad idea to help me now. Granted, the cravings for the pain killers have nothing to do with what my hands are doing, but being creative with some kind of clay is a great outlet for the mind and the spirit. Any kind of clay, Silly Putty, Play Dough, polymer clay, etc., would do. Being creative is so wonderful for the mind and the spirit!! I ought to know! I'm an arts teacher!!!
I'm in a pretty high profile job as well and had concerns over anonymity as well. The rooms of NA and AA are full of police officers, lawyers, doctors and almost every other profession. Don't us that as an excuse not to go like I did for 5 years. We take our anonymity very seriously, and our recovery depends on it. If you must, go to an out of town meeting...but GO. It very well may save your life.
Congrats on 9 days, that is awesome. Cravings suck and knowing there is easy access to drugs can make it even tougher. Did you tell your friend that you have quit? Breaking contact with those that use is important for our recovery, but easier said than done, I know. Stay strong and stay busy. You did good by posting so do whatever it takes to not go back now. Cravings pass:)
Honestly, I'm scared to go to an NA meeting because I'll graduate college in a few months and begin working with the police dept. - They find out everything about you, not sure what would happen if they knew I was an addict!
These cravings are killer, I can't wait for this to be over
Stay strong! No matter what! Just stay busy. Keep posting on here, watch a funny movie, read a book or listen to some music. Anything to keep your mind occupied. You made it through 9 days which is awesome! You surely don't want to have to go thru that again. The mental cravings are hard. Are you working on getting some Aftercare? All I can tell you is stay busy & don't pick up the phone tonight. Good Luck
