addicted?

How do I know I am addicted to hydrocodone? I take about 3-4 5/500 pills a day, no more. i do have back pain due to the fact that i had a nasty fall 2 years ago. i slipped on some ice in a parking lot and my back has not been the same since. the only thing that works is vicodin. my doctor won't write a prescription for me so i have to find other avenues to find it. when i do decide to give it up. what would i need to handle the withdrawel symptoms? And am i addicted?

I was prescribed vicodin by my Dr for many years for back pain and stayed with in the prescibed dosage. There were times, "to prove to myself that I wasn't addicted", that I would stop taking them for about a week. Since I could stop I thought that all was good. The pain always became real bad after about 3 or 4 days, so I was glad to start taking them again, after all I needed them for pain. I started reading this forum and found that the "bad pain" is a normal part of withdraw, and a way for your body to tell you that you "need" the drugs. My body lied, for the most part I don't "need" the drugs, it just makes life more pleasant. It has been well over 60 days since I have stopped taking vicodin, some days I have a lot of pain, some days I am ok. On the days that I have pain I am finding ways to tough it out without the drugs. So was I addicted? Some may say yes, some no, I am not sure. I know I was dependant on them for a pain free life, both metally and physically, but I want to be drug free, so I have made a choice to live without them.

A few question for you. What are you risking by getting them by other avenues? Maybe going to jail, assuming your married and/or have kids, putting your family at risk? If you go to jail, would you bring shame on your family? Would you hurt them financially, emotionally. Are the drugs really worth the risk?

I agree....I have never taken more than prescribed but I also have an addiction to them. I am in my first days of recovery and am still not sure the extent of my addiction, but I do know there IS an addiction even though I never "mis-used" them.

Look I am sure you are not addicted. People trough that word around alot...and do you use alone? That is a crazy question about your' pain pills...I mean ofcourse we take our' pian killers alone...it is not like we are going around looking for someone to get rid of their pain with us. Hydrocodone is used for other ailments besides pain. I have a Heart and lung disease and my doctors presribes them as a breathing treatment and pain killer in one.....so be careful..is the reason you started taking them no longer an issue? Have you been healed fo yht pian causing illness that made you start taking htem? If you have and you are still taking them anyway....you are an addict. If you still have the illness and truely need to take them you are OK man....and by the way 4-6 a day is fine....people that are addicted can take up to 30 a day!

sometimes i feel like i need it sometimes i don't. when my mind is distracted i tend not to think about it as much. as far as how many yes answers i had, less than 50%. i usually take it after i eat. i used to take a lot more when i was living alone, but when i am surrounded by people i tend not to think about it. does aleve work to help the aches and pains of withdrawels? besides that what else helps when i decide to stop?

Welcome to the forum.

You've come to a great place for help and support. I think just the fact that your "dr. won't write you a Rx" and "you're getting them from other avenues" sends up a red flag.

I've also heard..."if you're questioning whether you have a problem...you probaly do"

Let us know what you decide....

Keep posting.

“Am I an addict?” This is a question only you can answer. We found that we all answered different numbers of these questions “yes.” The actual number of “yes” responses wasn’t as important as how we felt inside and how addiction had affected our lives.

Addiction is defined as abusing. If you are taking as precribed and not overtaking your dose. You are probably not addicted. Dependency is when you have taken an 'addictive' substance and you react with withdrawals when you want of of them. Addicts or dependents will both go through withdrawls. Are you wanting to quit?
