For those who aren't making it

I've noticed in the 3 months that I've been on this forum, the many relapses being posted and have made many friends that I PMd and they would mention something about an upcoming script and then thier gone and no longer heard from again. Although I don't think people should post if they have made the decision to continue to acitvely use and there is no talking them out of it I wanted to share something with them that has made a difference in my recovery.

I have gone through withdrawl too many times to count over the passed 5 1/2 years and like all of us would swear on the grave of everyone that's left this world that this was it and I would never use again..not ever!!! Sometimes I made it through months sometimes I started using right after or during  withdrawls.  The thing is whenever I caved I beat myself up, felt hopeless and just burried myself in my addiction. I messed up, that was grounds to stay that way until things got unmanageble once again. The way I see it now is most people are bound to relapse. Its part of the disease, it's part of recovery. We need to quit beating ourselves up and feeling hopeless and just accept that it happened and learn what we can from it BUT get right back on that horse.

Having 2 months totally clean is best but if you mess up twice in 2 months for a few days, having 55 out of 60 days is still tremendous progress toward your recovery. Whether you go back and say your on day 1 again or continue on day 31..ect those clean days are still going to count on the way you feel and are adjusting to life as your non-addicted self. Please don't give up on yourself as easily as I did in the past. If I would have thought like that then I might have only used 30 days out of the passed 3 years and that would have been a life changing difference. We need to keep reminding ourselves, esp. when we feel like we can just use once just how important our recovery is to us and get back off those things ASAP. Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. Corey

I am glad to hear you say the things you did.  It gives me hope that i can stop and if I slip up when the pain is bad it is not the end of the world.  I just want to have that 30 days of not using.

This is just what I needed!  I feel the same way, I messed up today and feel back into my habit and decided that one mistake was no reason throw all my efforts away.  I then read this post and it completely bolstered my resolve. Thank you!

Cory you made anexcellent point.I agree with the concept of Harm-reduction.Like the analogy you made,i have problems with cocaine, pills and back in the day booze, now adays im on methadone for the pills,so if i dont use booze and pills,i dont pick-up thje cocaine andthats the most devastating for me.thanks john

Cory:

You could in no way have made a better point. We can only hope those folks, who may be any of us, at some time, continue to follow this forum.
