I told my mom the truth...

So for years I have been abusing the percocet taking from my mom so I always felt embarrassed and ashamed and not being able to talk to anyone. This morning I let it all out...I told her everything. Why and how it all started, how ashamed I have been and that I wanted to talk to her for so long. We are so close but I felt that since I was taking the pills from her I could never tell. She was so understanding...it was great. She is going to help me..She has a pain doctor that she goes to who she said is amazing and asked me to come with her to her appointment. I said he won't give me any medication to help me taper because I'm not in pain...I don't know what he will do but boy it feels good to tell someone I love about this problem. She is going to help me taper instead of going c/t.

Thanks, I thought so. I think I will just work with my mom and try and taper as best as I can without it affecting the amount she needs.

P.S. Most doctors won't give you any Percs to taper with. An addiction doctor might suggest methadone or suboxone (please, please, don't do those). Get counseling or NA. Please don't replace one drug for another.

That would depend on what kind of doctor you'd go to. I was on Percs and Vics  (approx. 12, 10mgs pills a day) for 4 years. I went on Suboxone and am still on it and wishing I never did get on this stuff. So please don't go that route.  I Highly recommended tapering or just going cold turkey. Try going to NA or find a counselor.

Thanks for your reply. If say we did go to a doctor ( not hers ) but another doctor that deals with issues like this what do they do for you? Do they give you pills to taper or just council you?

If you drop from a daily dose of 8 pills, down to 3, you will experience withdrawals. I would suggest dropping down 1 or 2 pills every 2 weeks, to avoid a lot of discomfort. When you get down to a daily dose of 2 pills, space the reduction to 3 weeks. It's harder when you get down to the last few pills, before stopping altogether.
Good luck to you.

I met up with my mom yesterday and we decided not to talk to her doctor just incase they decide to look into her pain mgmt regeimn, that can't be changed. We are going to try this together and she is going to try and support me with her pills...she will help me taper. Are the w/d symptons that much less when you taper? I was taking up to eight percocet a day and she wants me to go down to three. I think that is too low to soon. What do you think...boy I can't tell you how good it feel to finally tell her what I did for all these years.

Please, when you go to the doctor, make sure you tell him that YOU TOOK every pills from your mother. Never say that she gave you even a single one for a headache once. I'm not saying that she ever did. The problem is that if she gave you even one pill, it's a diversion of controlled substances, and your mother's pain management contract may be terminated.

That is so great that you came clean to your mom.  Having her support will be so beneficial to you getting clean.  That took alot of courage to do what you did......Way to go!!       sara
