Help with tapering off of xanax

I have been taking 1mg xanax every night for almost 4 years now. I was wondering how to taper off of it. Should I go down to 1 1/2 tablets of .5mg per night or should I taper slower? How long should I take this amount=2 or 3 weeks? Before going down to 1mg per night to keep from having withdrawal symptoms? Has this amount=1mg everyday for 4 years done any damage to my health? Please help me with this. I have read so many different things I don't know anymore. I would get my doc's advice but he seems to think I have nothing to worry about but after reading others that have been on the same amount as I have for the same length of time say they are experiencing really bad withdrawal symptoms. My doc is leaving his practice to be an ER physician so I really won't have a doc after next month. thank you

I would get help from my regular doctor but he doesn't think it's anything to worry about. I slept just fine until he gave me the xanax. I had a few panic attacks which I realize now was because of a lot of stress in my life at the time. So he puts me on xanax. I took one .5mg one night and I slept like a dream. Well, you can guess after after a little while 1 .5mg didn't knock me out so I had to take two. I got to the place where 2 .5mg wouldn't put me to sleep. That's where I drew the line. I knew 2 could lead to 3 and so on and so on. I went to my pharmacist and asked him to give me a new prescription of .25mg so I could taper off. My pharmacist helped me understand how to taper. I am on my second week of 3 1/2 .25mg tablets and doing just fine. The first night I only got like 3 hours of sleep but each night got better. I sleep 8 hours a night now. I figure I have time to get off this junk I didn't get into this mess over night and I'm not gonna get out of it over night. It may take a while but I will succeed! Thanks for your information.

HI I agree with the above poster xanex comes in .25 and .5 as well as 1mg doses
if you get a doctor involved they can right you a combo of scrips to ween you off properly
its going to take a month or mabe a little longer but doing it right the withdrawals wont be that bad...you will still feel it but it wont be sever...this is something you must have a doctor help you with to avoid the risk of seizures good luck and God bless....Gnarly
