Ive never used it but I looked it up because I'm always wanting to learn about new herbs....interesting.

What is kratom?

Kratom is a tree native to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar [Burma], and elsewhere). Its botanical name is Mitragyna speciosa. Kratom is in the same family as the coffee tree (Rubiaceae). The leaves of kratom have been used as an herbal drug from time immemorial by peoples of Southeast Asia. It is used in folk medicine as a stimulant (at low doses), sedative (at high doses), recreational drug, pain killer, medicine for diarrhea, and treatment for opiate addiction

What are the effects?

Kratom is a rather unique drug in that a low to moderate dose will usually (but not always) be stimulating, while a high dose is almost always quite sedating. This is apparently because the active alkaloids have both stimulant and sedative effects. Which predominates probably depends both on blood level and individual differences between users.

The stimulant level: At the stimulant level the mind is more alert, physical energy and sometimes sexual energy is increased, ability to do hard monotonous physical work may be improved, one is more talkative, friendly, and sociable. Some people find this level edgy rather than pleasant.

The sedative-euphoric-analgesic level: At this dosage you will be less sensitive to physical or emotional pain, feel and look calm, have a general feeling of comfortable pleasure, and may enter a pleasant dreamy reverie. You may experience some itching or sweating. Your pupils may be constricted (small). It is possible you may feel nauseated, but if you lie down and relax the nausea should quickly cease. You may find your appreciation of music is increased. It will be very pleasant to lie down on your back in a semi-darkened room, with eyes closed, and just listen to your favorite music. If you do this you may be fortunate enough to enter the delightful mixed-state of ‘waking-dreaming’ where you have one foot in dreamland and the other foot in the real world. This state was much prized by the 19th century Romantic writers, who, lacking knowledge of kratom, resorted to the much more habit-forming narcotic, opium, to achieve it. The effects of kratom usually last about six hours. The higher the dose, the stronger the effects, and the longer they last. Many people report a positive ‘afterglow’ the next day.

"...anyway I've been taper down today and plan on starting tommorrow on my cold Turkey detox. My way of using is snorting. "

You can do it at home...cold turkey. Go to a meeting, church, somewhere you can get support. Stay on this site. Once you go CT...give it a few days for the worst of it to be over. Drink plenty of water...try to stay busy if you can because a huge part of detox is the mental aspect...I hear the Thomas Recipe is good although I cant personally vouch for it....I used herbs to help me with detox issues. Valerian root and Kava tea for anxiety/sleep issues and Ginger for nausea.

Good luck

Hello:) I just want to say Ive detoxed from heroin a bunch of times...a whole bunch of times. I cant comment on methadone or suboxone as Ive never used either when detoxing from. I don't know your method of use but if you were IV using...id suggest going to a detox facility. I understand you have a family and newborn etc...but if you keep using...well, I think you know how it could play out otherwise you wouldn't have posted here. I really don't know your situation because that plays into what kind of advice I give you. Like...how much and how you were using. If your seeing a doctor then you must have insurance and if you have insurance...then you may have access to a detox facility. If you can find someone to watch the kids....go. Last time I went...it was for 9 days and it made detox a whole lot easier than doing it on your own.

If you don't have access to a detox and your going to do it at home...stay plugged into this site. If you weren't IV using....physically it will be easier. Its doable though and it sounds like you are aware of your problem. If your doctor thinks you need methadone or suboxone...hey...he's the doc. Just be careful with that stuff because there's a .lot of people on this forum that are weaning off that stuff now. Just know that you can do it...really! Im not trying to say that to make you feel better...I really mean it. You can get clean and kick heroin!

God bless

I personally would try to avoid methadone & suboxone. Eventually you would have to detox from that and from what I have heard, it can be just as hard as herion & other opiates.  Of course, thats just my own opinion.
The worst of the physical symptoms are over within 2 weeks. The mental part is something addicts need to work through for the rest of our lives, but even that gets much easier as you grow.  It just takes time.  The first thing I would do is to start to tell yourself that YOU CAN BEAT THIS.  Tell yourself this over and over until you really start to believe it.  I would also read as much as I can about what to expect from herion detox.  Knowing what to expect, and more importantly, how people who already made it to the other side really helped me getting over my fear of detox.  So much of this is mental, even though it doesn't feel like it in the beginning.  You sound very motivated and I think it is awesome that you are researching this and are asking for help.  That is one of the biggest & hardest steps to take. Many users never get to the point where you are at, ready to quit.  So be proud of yourself for that.
Once you start to detox, it really is alot like a bad flu, and it will end.  However, if you get too sick, you always can go to an ER.  They will keep you regardless if you have insurance, until you stablize.  So that is always an option.

Wishing the very best for you.  I know you can do this.

You can do it at home!  It IS possible!  Isn't a few days of feeling rough worth giving your son a dad?  I think you've already decided to stop........just have to decide how to stop.  Have you ever been to NA?  Counseling? You can google some good ways to stop.  Things to use.  The Thomas Recipe is good for info.  It won't be easy, but you can still do it!

Hi Chris.. Welcome to the forum.. You can still walk away.. It sounds like you have hit your bottom. many of us have gone thru H wd at home as long as you are relatively healthy we have tips on ways to make the wd bearable supplements heat, exercise and such but what really gets you thru is the mind set of no matter what your body puts you thru, your mind puts you thru, that you are determined to come out the otherside free of your active addiction.. 5 days 5 days of feeling real bad and no sleep then you are free... very doable with the right mindset.. as it is. it is you our H for it is trying very hard to take everything then kill you... I hope you stay read the stories look up the Thomas recipe the Amino acid protocol on the bottom of the forum.. Grow that fire in your belly  Get Your life back.. You can do this. Keep posting pick up support. drop friends who use and hit up a NA meeting.. Only you can get your life back Use this forum as your stepping point. If you can go to detox go But grow that fire... I wish you well.. lesa
