Life after surgery

Hello All ....

Well, I made it thru surgery.  Unfortunately there were some complications.  I had a lot of scar tissue from my hysterectomy and the surgery lasted 3 1/2 hours and the surgeon nicked my bowel.  Because of the "nicking" which is really a laceration, I cant eat solid foods until next Tuesday, and pain and recovery time are worse.  I just got home from the hospital, and feel like crap.  My spirits are high, but so is the pain.  Without much of a choice, I agree to take the pain meds at home.  If I didn't, the Dr. would not have sent me home.  I have been running a fever for 2 days, and am getting cranky over not eating.  My familiy is being great about the pain pills.  They keep them, and they dispense them.  I am not feeling any draw too them.  The pain is bad, the pills do not  give that happy feeling, just usually sleep.  Each day does get better.  The Doctor says the fever is me healing but it makes me feel like crap.  My lungs are clear and I am showing no signs of infection.  And when I sleep, I sweat terribly.
Has anyone had these problems post-op?  Any suggestions?
Thank You all for the constant support.  Your friendship means the world to me!!

Just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you.  Sounds like you have been through a lot.  Just worry about getting better and take good care of yourself.  No need to suffer and you have a good plan with others in charge of your meds.  Just heal and let us know how you are doing.

Hey Penn, Happy to hear your on the mend, but sorry your surgery was not uneventful. Like Barb says watch that fever. Bowel (nicks) is nothing to play around with. Btw, why do they call em nicks when they are really CUTS (ha)! I too had a hysterectomy a few years back and they "nicked" my bladder. Had to go home with a catheter for 5 weeks. I know this recovery is not fun, but you'll be better than normal once you heal especially if they did remove the offending scar tissue. Make sure you get up and walking as soon as your Dr. allows. Thats going to keep your spirits up and help you get well. Cool showers may lower your fever and have you feeling less weak. Good luck. Keep us updated.

I hope once your healed your issues caused by your gall bladder are all better. I have heard for some nasuea remains for awhile. But since you didn't mention that, that's great, you prob won't have it!

Watch that fever though. Your lungs clear is a great sign, as pneumonia is a possible complication from any type of stomach area surgery, as the pain tends to make people breathe more shallow.

But having said that, keep an eye on it. If the fever lingers, please call the Dr. Having had 19 surgeries myself, plus working in the hospital, I know they usually say report a low grade fever that runs over three days, or any fever reaching higher than 101.

I remember your post now. That you were being hospitalized, which is rare for gall bladder surgery anymore. Sorry, being a newbie I am trying to remember everyone!

Wishing you a speedy recovery, with as little discomfort as can be.

Hi! I am not sure what kind of surgery you had, but glad to hear your home.
I just had to break down and take pain meds too, for a kidney stone. I only had 28 days clean. I too had somebody hold them, and still allowed myself only enough to make it somewhat tolerable. I took 4 1/2, broken in halves, then got rid of the rest when stone passed. It didn't cause me to want to continue either. I was in fact mad I needed them.

And so far, no wds again.
Besides sweating, what problems do you mean? A fever isn't good post op.
I had scar tissue removed from a prior hysterectomy and two c sections. This was years ago. It alleviated the pain totally. But I don't know what you had done, and did they just remove the scar tissue because they were already in there?

Sorry you are feeling so bad.
