Trying to get off of methadone

HI, I have been taking 10mg. 3x a day(methadone) for about 3 years, I have been taking only 1 a day for the last 2 weeks, I feel some withdrawls, like going to the bathroom alot and uneasy feeling.  I have one pill left, I don't want to take anymore, does anyone know what I should expect after I take this last one tomorrow, or should I give in and have the dr. slowly take me off, I just don't want anymore in my system, but I'm scared of the withdrawls.  Pleae help!

Oh...you're sweet.  It's all hard but you'll do this!  Also, you'll be able to truly evaluate your pain better when the Methadone is not on board any more...

I will.  I do have to have something after 5 back surgeries and arthritis and fibromygia, but methadone is something I want to do without.  I don't understand why they give you something that is so hard to get off of, but I am learning alot here.  I just feel sorry for the ones that have been taking more then me and are having a bad time, it just doesn't seem fair.  I hope everyone makes it!!!

Thank you very much, as you can tell I didn't know alot about methadone, I would have tapered off a little better if I knew what i was doing. But I just looked and I have 2 pills left so I have now cut them into pieces and am going to try that while they last, I know if I call the dr. he will want to put me on more to get off of them and I don't want anymore in my system, so I hope I can make it.  Thanks for your concern, I Love This Site!!

Yes...Tramadol helps with withdrawals because it contains an opiate like compound and it's addicting. But,with chronic pain you'll need something I guess. Do your research, though!

You'll have some withdrawals; that's a fast taper.  It's up to you, either way. If you only have one left, that doesn't help much..

Let's see what Gnarly has to say;he's been down this road. It may depend on whether you want to rip off the bandaid fast or slowly, you know. If you're healthy you'll tolerate the withdrawal just fine. It will be unpleasant but it passes. Don't be afraid of it...you kind of need to embrace it and say "I feel awful but I'm getting better" because it's a positive thing!

Stay in touch!

Thank You So Much! I will do that. My reg. dr.(not the pain dr.) said he would put me on ultram for pain, will this help with withdrawls? My problem is that I can't afford to see the pain managment dr. anymore and I want the methadone out of my system so that is why I'm trying to get off of it and just see my reg.family dr. for pain.

HI you have been tapering but jumping from 10mg is a bit much you may want to get a pill cutter and break it down into pieces and spread out our dose over a couple of days
this will ez the withdrawals you have been on a low dose so this shouldent be to bad expect no sleep for a wile and some stomach problem but that should be about it hang in there keep posting if it is any worst then this you may or may not experience the energy crash its hard to say keep us up to date......Gnarly
