it is almost impossible to get off with no ill effects..but u can lessen the wd effects considerable..lots of good info in the health pages..good luck to u
There is no way to taper off of oxycontin with no ill side effects. It is a very strong opiate and unfortunately, there is no easy way out. Tapering is tricky there are some people who can do and there are more people who can't. Part of the problem with tapering is that you are essentially in prolonged wds over weeks or months as opposed to full on wds for a shorter time period. The severity is much less for a taper but it is way longer. That being said - tapering slowly would lessen the severity even more. You said amount of pills is not an issue. You will have to cut pills in pieces - this may effect the time control aspect however, if you are trying to taper this is a good thing. Just try taking less and see how you feel, oxy is long-acting so try and stay at least a few days or a week on a lowered dose. IMHO methadone is unnecessary and overkill. That long half life is what makes it harder to get off of but everyone does things differently!
"If you can cut down by 10-20% at a time it won't be so bad. I don't think you can do that with Oxycontin"
If you cut or crush an Oxycontin or other generic Oxycodone controlled-release (extended-release), you while ruin the controlled release action of the pill.
A better idea to taper your dose, is to use a liquid version of Oxycontin so that you can use a syringe (without the needle). This is so you can measure a more precise dose.
You could also switch to Methadone. It is has a much longer half-life so there will be fewer ups and downs. And it's cheap ($0.15 per 10 mg).
Most importantly go ask your doctor to help you get off the Oxycontin.
Good luck...
If you can cut down by 10-20% at a time it won't be so bad. I don't think you can do that with Oxycontin unless the doctor changes the dose for you everytime you reduce, unless you are chewing the pills. If you have already been cutting or chewing the pills you can try to reduce the amount every couple of days, or everyday if you can handle that if wd's aren't too bad and you should be okay. You will still have some wd's but they won't be near as bad. You can do it though. Good luck.
You can taper and it will make wd milder but it wont complaty take it away .Best way to taper is to cut out a pill or half a pill every few days until you are off them.It can be done but I wont lie its not easy and alot of addicts cant do it .It does help if you have someone that will hold your pills for you .You can do this .
