Pain Killer Recovery

Hi,

About a year and a half ago I was in a car accident that resulted in a total loss of the vehicle. It wasn't until a few months later when I started to feel the effects the accident had on my body. I had back pain, neck pain, joint pain, leg pain, basically if you could list a body part it hurt. This pain seemed to get especially worse with cold weather. Long story short, I went to a number of doctors and was eventually recommended to a pain management doctor. When I went in for the appointment, the doctor immediately accused me of being a drug addict, saying I was only there to obtain pain medication. At this point I hadn't developed an abuse problem, but the experience had crushed my self esteem so much that I did not want to be put in that type of situation again. So instead of seeking help from another professional I decided to self medicate promising myself I would not allow myself to become addicted. I would later learn that this is easier said than done. Months later, and thousands of dollars spent, I was given an ultimatum by my girlfriend. Get off the drugs or she was going to take everything and leave. So I set a date to quit and was able to find some suboxone to assist with the withdrawals.

My problem now is that I do not want to purchase drugs illegally anymore. I have made an appointment to go see another pain management doctor to get assistance continuing the abstinence from pain killers. My biggest fear now is that I will face the same type of reticule and finger pointing that I did in the past. I have just come so far in the recovery process that I do not want to revert back to my old ways and possibly lose everything that I have worked so hard for. If anyone could give me any insight or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

So,you're on Sub now but don't want to purchase it illegally anymore and want a pain management doctor to help you...Is that right?

I wouldn't do that. If anything, you need a doctor who specializes in Sub.

How much do you know about Suboxone?

I think your best bet is to wait until someone with actual sub experience can help you decide what might be best for you.  I'm sure that person will reply to you soon so don't lose hope!

You need a physical therapist, start yoga, and don't turn to a pill to solve your problems.  Pills only temporarily cover the problem and you could potentially injure yourself even more.  If you don't feel any pain because you're on pills, you'll strain yourself more than you would if you actually felt the pain.

I was addicted to pills (that a pain management Dr. was prescribing me) for 3 years.  Once he decided he was going to cut me off, I turned to the streets which turned into a 7 year drug binge.  Now I'm in recovery but the pain hasn't gone away and still needs to be dealt with.

The bad news is, nothing is going to completely take away your pain like the narcotics did.  So gear up for some manning up. But there are steps you can take to heal your body instead of covering up the pain.  After all, wouldn't you like to at least try to heal yourself now before you are 60 and you are forced to be on pills because your pain is so bad?

I hope you do.  I hope you feel better real soon.

The doctor that I am going to see is someone who specializes in helping patients with an addiction problem.

That's good to hear. I doubt that he/she would ridicule you. Don't you?  Addiction specialists are very empathetic, special people from my experience.

It's hard to get from one room to another some days I'm sure, but I can attest that walking (I do the treadmill), a better diet, and things like stretching and Yoga do help. In fact, after WDing for the first (and prayerfully the last) time over Christmas, I was scared to go to my first Pain Management doc. To my surprise, he was thrilled I was off the meds even though we'd never met. He even told me they had an accupuncturist on site. I told him I had gone to see one a few times and it really helped. It really, really, helped.

Hang in there. Really, hang in there. Keep posting. Good words seem to flow from this place just at the right time. Be encouraged. :)
