methedone & alcohol

My son is on methedone for chronic pain.   it is his birthday this weekend, and he'd like to have a few drinks.   what are the dangers, if any, of mixingh methedone & alcohol?   is beer safer than hard liquor?

HI Mary I was also put on methadone for pain management I was on it for 6 1/2yrs
I have disk problems in my lower back...since I have weened off it my pain clock has sorta reset itself and Im in less pain now then when I was on the methadone ..it takes a wile but once your body clears out all the narcotics regular pain relievers start to work again
its a viscous cycle but once its broken you can live life without narcotics..im not an isolated case ether many here have found out the same thing I wish your son well
and hope when its time for him to get off the methadone he comes here for support and help good luck tell him happy birthday from all of us..and God bless.....Gnarly

thank you so much!  he has decided it isn't worth the risk, and boy, am i glad!   not drinking isn't quite the way he had planned on spending his 25th bday, but that's how it goes.  his goal, is to get off this stuff asap.   although not wanting to get laid off from work, which is very physical, which is why with his back problems he is on this stuff in the first place, he is kind of anticipating getting laid off, so he can use that time to get off this stuff.  what happens, though, when he goes back to his job & he starts hurting again??  time will tell, and in the meantime i will do as always and pray for healing & wisdom.   thank you all so much!  have a great rest of the weekend, and God bless.  mary

Hi~  I just think it's best if he stays away from beer etc...It's such a crap shoot!  One time you can be fine and and other time not fine at all.    Why risk it??   Even just one beer often leads to a second one...He should be careful...and have a real Happy

When I was on methadone I had only about 3 mix drinks at a time on it. But like gnarly said that was the addict in me.. Make sure he doesn't over do it..

Happy birthday to your son. I don't no about amts, but I do no the little girl I raused for 7yrs lost her dad who was 27 to methadone and beer. He had drank beer before,but this time he didn't wake up. Had 4 small kids. So please stay away from that!

i just read your responses to him, and he has a question about quantity. is it ANY quantifty at all, or would a few beers, no more than 4, be ok?  1? 2?  thanks.

thank you both for your insight.  he told me he's had a couple of beers wtih no adverse effects, but with it being his birthday, we were worried. in fact, he is the one who asked me to go online & find out for him.   i will read your comments to him, and hope he has the sense to not drink for this year's birthday.  thanks again & God bless.

This can be very deadly when mixed.
