Cancelled Script without picking up! Hard to imagine.

I had to meet with my knee surgeon yesterday (2 previous surgeries) and I still have some pain and issues.  I will start PT (again) to try and correct some issues and hopefully allow me to run again, ride my bike, elliptical and such without pain and swelling.  Basically just allowing me to stay healthy and tolerate the aches and pains.   Anyway...... today I received one of those automated calls from Walgreen's Pharmacy saying my prescription was ready for pickup.  I was not sure if it was something for my wife or not so I called them back and guess what?   The surgeon must have known that my knee issues are very painful and therapy was going to cause more pain before it gets better and called in Norco.  40 tablets and an additional 1 refill.  (80 total)   My heart began racing and all of those past calls to get refills began racing across my mind.  I was stunned for a moment to be honest with you.  It really....REALLY caught me off guard.  The good thing is that all of my pain and agony over that last couple of years was flashing across my mind at the same time and I quickly asked the pharmacist if they can cancel the script and the refills.   She said absolutely!   The funny thing is that I stayed on the line asking multiple times to "Make sure it is completely deleted including the refill"  I even waited 30 minutes and then logged onto the internet site to confirm it was deleted and it was!   Awesome!     I have told the surgeon before not to give me anything, but it is a large practice so I did not get upset with them.  It comes down to ME in the end anyway.  There are going to be times when the possibility of a script for pain meds is in front of us.  Dentist, doctor, surgery, chronic pain such as what I have in several areas and more, but it is really important to KILL that script ASAP!  Don't think about it!   Just react and stop it before going down that horrible road we all know all to well.  I have even gone through the step of calling the pharmacy and asking them not to fill narcotics or Tramadol.   It is very rewarding to actually DELETE a script!   Make up your mind and stick to it no matter how difficult.  Just remember.....  Sticking to your decision to not use is so much easier than living a life on drugs, stopping, detoxing and horrible withdrawals that can last for months and months.  I'll take a 60 second phone call and say "delete" over WD's any day!    60 seconds or 60 days?   I will take the first one and hope somebody else will read this and do the same.  You all give me strength and I want to give it back.   Thanks again everyone!

I remember the day I did the same thing and I also remember the day I did not.  The latter resulted in 5 more months of taking...the former..gave me peace and over a year clean. Yes, you did great!

You rock! Wow, that must have been empowering. You are so right, making that call or going through withdrawals... The choice is clear to me. I will remember that, because that really is the bottom line. If I get a script, I will wake the beast, and I will be back in that prison again, and eventually have to go through withdrawal again. That is not an option for me. I literally wanted to die because I was so sick. I will do almost anything to avoid doing that again, that it is one of my powerful tools in recovery. Thank you for sharing this. It is amazing that you were able to call and cancel the script. Good for you!

Just read your post on the 21st...You got rid of the meds, so -
CONGRATULATIONS!!!  And honestly, what you did when you had the pharmacy cancel the script is something that many of us would have stumbled over. I know I would have really had a difficult time with it.
Excellent job.

GOOD FOR YOU!!! YOU did this!!! You did your recovery a great service today and showed your addiction you're determined to stay clean. Doesn't it feel great to have the power to NOT USE? Words mean nothing until we put them into action, and you did. No fear!

I was going to say what you did was amazing - and it is - but after reading ImDONE's post, I have to ask...Do you have meds? If you had them and haven't flushed them, then canceling this script is really moot.
And I agree - it will ultimately come down to us in these situations, BUT, you absolutely need to get your doc to understand and confirm that you cannot have pain meds. It needs to be in your record. Being sure that happens is also your responsibility. Imagine what would have happened if you were in a weaker state of mind and received the call?
There will, in all probability, come a time in our lives when we'll need surgery, etc, and thus need some sort of pain meds. When that happens, there is a way to manage, without heading down the path to relapse.
Anyway, I really hope that you've gotten rid of any meds you may have had and that I'm going on and on for nothing.

Does this mean you got rid of the pills you currently have in your possession?  I'm sorry to keep pestering you on this, but just making sure.

And equally important - GOOD FOR YOU for getting rid of the script.  Well done.
