Hello, ive been off heroin for over 2 years because of Subutex maintenance.
Now im clean of all drugs.
I agree, its not for everyone, but i would still be using if it weren't for Subs.
Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Great post!  It's nice to read about someone who has not had a nightmare experience, from a person who realizes that sub isn't a miracle cure and that it's not for everyone!!

It definitely does have its place for some people, especially chronic relapsers.  Often they need that normalcy and stability of feeling normal to get back on their feet, so they can actually work on their addiction.  That builds their self confidence as well.

Anyways, thanks for sharing!

I've been on Suboxone for the past 2 years and tapered myself down at a slow rate from 8mg a day to currently at 0.25mg a day and had a much easier time of it than any other opiates.

That includes Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Fentanyl, Morphine, Demerol, and Hydrocodone, none of which I was ever able to successfully taper myself down from and ended up doing every pill/patch I had and suffering through WD symptoms, only to go right back to it once I was over them.

Yes, it is up to you to make changes. It's not a magic pill, and it's not hell sent either. When used properly it can be a valuable tool to assist you in getting clean, but you have to cut ties with the people and places you did drugs with or at, and get your life straight. It's you that has to change and only you can make that change.

I don't know your situation, you haven't even said what kind of pills you were on, only that you were taking 40 a day, or what dosage of Sub you're on. However, if I were you I'd look at a short term time limit on Sub, just long enough to get past the worst part of the withdrawals symptoms of the Drug Of Choice you're addicted to now, and not long enough to become addicted to Sub. I'm talking a week tops.

Otherwise, yes, you probably are trading up in your habit from a monkey on your back to a gorilla doing a break dance.

Myself, I have a long history of opiate addiction and needed to stay on it 2 years to get my life together. Maybe you won't.

You haven't made a mistake; you've made a decision. I applaud you for taking the huge step to recovery and you WERE taking A LOT of pills...

Just keep in mind that sub is an opiate, as well. The folks who do the best with it are only on it for a few weeks to a month. Continue to do your research and you'll see that staying on it for a brief time and taking the lowest dose possible is usually the best.

Let us know how you're doing-

You've gotten great advice already, I'll add my two cents.

Suboxone CAN be a great recovery tool, but there are some things you have to understand going in.  One, it's not a way around w/ds...you will have to face them eventually with the subs, and due to Sub's longer half life, usually the w/ds are a bit rougher and last longer than the partial agonist opiates like hydrocodone, and oxycodone.

Also, Suboxone is not a cure or a fix.  A person still needs to do ALL of the necessary work on their recovery, including education, meetings, learning about triggers and relapse, learning other ways to cope.  If a person JUST takes sub then comes off, they're usually not successful.  I've seen plenty of patients succeed and do well on Sub, and I've also seen many falter, and relapse.  I can tell you that the people who took their recovery seriously, and REALLY were doing the work were the ones who did well.  Also, the people who tapered slowly and gradually, getting down to the lowest possible dose are the ones who did better.  It can be done!

All of that being said, IMO, it's just as easy to work your recovery and get through the w/ds without adding sub to the mix.  There are certain situations where Sub is obviously more warranted than others.  A person with a very heavy habit, with a lot of relapses under their belt would benefit from the stability of the Suboxone while they work on their recovery.  I would always tell people to give it a go without it first, if possible.  Just my opinion.  You said you were taking 40 a day..40 pills?  And if so, of what?  How long?  Have you ever tried to get clean before?

Keep us updated on what you've decided to do, we'll be here to support you!

Just as the people said above, its your choice. My opinion is stay the hell away from the subs. I know you have to.have everything out of your system for 48 hrs before u can start the subs which is what I assume your saying, and your going to the.Dr to start the sub program. The Dr that you've chosen, what is his protocol? How long will he allow u to stay on the subs? If its a short period of time....??? Maybe? My Dr told me I should be on them for life...was on for 6 yrs! I think of it this way, when I was taking opiates, I always tried to quit, taper, etc...but I never could do it....its the same with the subs. They have opiates in them.

My sister has been on sub for 4 years. She was on oxy for 13 & said coming off subs was far more worse. She has made it 16 days before & still was deathly ill. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

Hi as someone above said, it is your choice, 40 a day of anything is not good, could cause many other problems.

I have a friend who is taking the subutex, she thinks it is great.  She has no cravings anymore.  She is leading a fairly normal life.
She started out at  24mg a day, now a few years later it is a much smaller dose like 2 to 4.

I do think that counseling is very important.

Like everyone else said you want to stay on it a short of a time however everyone is different, everyone has a different story.
Good luck

I tried a few subs for a quick detox once, (got them from a friend) After doing a lot of research and talking to people I was like "oh heck no". You are basically trading an opiate for a much stronger opiate. Subs have a much longer half life that lets say oxys, H, vikes, ect. Everyone is different tho. I found them hard to take, the taste, the waiting time to dissolve, the headaches. I only took them for 3 days and went crawling back to my doc for my reg script. Some say you end up on subs forever. Ultimately it's up to you and your doctor. Just listen to what people say on here and take what you want from their advice. I'm still a newbie. 16 days off Vicodin cold turkey. Was on 120 mg a day for 4 years. Good luck, we are all here for you.

Hi- Forty a day is a lot so you needed to do something and you chose Sub. That's your choice as Keith said, and it may work great for you!  My only advice would be to make it a brief time on Sub and be sure to get counciling and support for recovery...

I don't understand what "my day on Sub" means. Do you mean you started it today?  Did a doctor prescribe it?  Good luck-

Theirs people on the forum for and some against sub, ultimitly its your choice alone. I chose another route but what worked for me may not work for you. I"ve seen success stories and I"ve seen folks begging help to get off of it. One thing everyone seems to agree on is if you choose to use it make it as short a time as possible. I'm sure that others will respond. G.L.
