My grandfather used to put whiskey on our gums when we were little and teething. I guess it helped or got us drunk.
The caffeine in t-bags is supposed to help ....i would try anything.to stay away from narcotics...anything
My dentist swears by a damp tea bag.....gross. And, yes in the "OLD DAYS" they would drink a whole-lotta whiskey........Not recommended ........but i bet it worked.....lol.
Nauty.......
I'm sorry about the toothache try motrin and put a clove on it. They also have the temp fillings at drug stores you can apply yourself if you need a illing for exposed nerve endings. I hope this helps a little the clove is for tooth pain and a home remedy.

Aspirin is the ONLY thing that will help. Take AT LEAST 4 Bayer Aspirin now! You can take up to 6 but then you may have stomach upset. I promise you will have releif in 30 minutes.
Mandee, there's definitely other meds out there. A root-canal shouldn't warrent use of narcs. My dentist is so quick to offer lortabs for rc's...its pathetic. In fact, when I was abusing pills I actually faked a couple of tooth aches & went to the dentist saying I thought I needed a rc. I think I've had 2 unnecessary rc's on perfectly healthy teeth...just bc I knew he'd write out a script for 50 lortabs! He even took xrays on my teeth & didn't find anything wrong w/them, but I insisted I was in pain. One time, I forgot that I had already had a rc on a tooth & I went in saying that tooth was really hurting...he said "that's strange...I've already done a rc on this tooth, it shouldn't hurt--there's no nerves there."....opps, my bad. Naughty you're right...this kind of thing just goes to show the lengths addicts will go thru to get pills. I'm too big of a wimp to smash my foot in w/a brick...but digging out 2 perfectly good molars for some pills...Keerayzzzeeee!!!
I do feel for you...since i quit, I have gotten the flu and a stomach virus...try not and take any narcs if u can...my mom just had a root canal and took tylenol afterwards...she is scared because of what happened to me...try ice and the numbing meds to your gums first...it is true...they did manage without narcotics a long time ago...I am not sure if i took them right now at 6 weeks clean if they would make a dent in the pain as my tolerence was so high...hopefully you can hurry and get the root canal...i read this morning about someone relapsing and going thru WDs again after a tooth problem...be careful
mandee, I called my daughter after I read your post, cause I thought I remembered her saying that when she was going through wd's she had terrible jaw pain and even thought she might have an infected tooth at the time. It turns out that she realized she was grinding her teeth during the night, and she bought a mouth guard at the drugstore to wear at night and after that the pain went away. But if you think you might have something a dentist might have to treat, then a quick pain reliever to get you through until your appointment is...soak a Q-Tip with Texas Pete Hot Sauce and dab around and into the cavity of the painful tooth. It will burn like heck at first, but it relieves pain quicker and longer than Oragel or any other otc toothache pain reliever. Hope this helps.

when i first stopped using , I remember hoping for things to happen to me so I would have a ligament reason to use ,that is pathetic to say but it shows how deeply this can run .Now my worst fear is needing to use for stuff like this ,so the mind does heal.
This makes me think about a post I read yesterday. A gentleman posted that he took a brick and literally "SMASHED HIS OWN FOOT" as a way to get meds.....that post was so brutally honest and sincere.......It goes to show how and what our minds will allow us to do to get these horrible pills. this is totally un-related to your post, but for me that was a hell of a powerful post to read.......for me anyway.
Nauty..............
Just A quick note, What did people do 50yrs ago when they had pain, I bet it wasnt get all doped up on opaites, they delt with it, What im trying to say its all in our heads we dont need this s**t to deal with pain.
your body is sending out messages give me pain meds ,motrin is honeslty the best for tooth pain ....... You are going to have to start telling your mind NO more pain meds.
your kind of in a war of the mind right now its wants pain meds you have to fight it off .
bull pucky........you don't need the meds. I've had root canals up the ying-yang and the pain --if any--only lasts a day or two.......if that. don't let your mind make up excuses. Please don't take this wrong---but you probably will--how come when were using, we don't have UTI's , kidney stones, bursting cysts, syatica.....bla bla bla........I'm starting to wonder if taking these meds cause these things. there are drugs out there that are very effective for all the things you mentioned that are not opiates. I do know how awful tooth pain can be, but It doesn't last. Once the root is gone, you shouldn't have the pain, as thats whats causing it in the first place. Granted, I am speaking for myself, but I know you can do just fine after the root canal without pain meds........
Nauty............Excedrine Migrain will help greatly with the pain after a root canal. Good luck at the dentist today........No narc's. If you can go thru withdrawal, you can handle a day of pain. You can do it.....!!!
I'm sorry you're going thru this...if you get pain meds..let someone hold them...as stated above...take the minimum....use ibuprophen in between......YOU CAN DO THIS!!
Good luck...EEWWW...i hate going to the dentist!! LOL
Yeah...I've been there with the toothaches. It's what started my addiction. I have a few teeth that I need to have surgically removed. I've had toothaches where the pain went up the side of my face all the way down to my arm. They put me on antibiotics and gave me numerous pain meds in emergency (I was in excruciating pain and NOTHING worked). I had morphine, Tylenol 3's and another shot of something that I can't recall the name of. The only thing that helped was the antibiotics over a day or two of taking them. One thing that helped, but was a pain to do, was a bit of cool water. You hold a bit in your mouth and you feel instant relief. Problem is...as soon as you spit out the water, you may actually find the tooth aches or throbs a bit more. With me, I was in so much pain...I didn't care...I had a cup a cool water to drink from and another cup to spit back into. As long as I was doing that...I had relief. The other thing that the dentist might do is give you a high dose of ibuprofen (Advil) by prescription. They can actually really help and there's no chance of getting buzzed or hooked on them. :)
Hope you feel better soon...I'd rather have any other kind of pain than a toothache. Anyone who's been there can relate I'm sure.
Keep your chin up...it wont last forever and there's always alternatives to narcotic pain relief.
beenthere125 :)
Listen to the young lady Ohio,Once the infection is cleared. The pain will no longer exist,as for needing pain meds for the root canal you wont,as far as pain goes its nothing. The infection is what is causeing the pain.
ouch, i feel your pain. i have to say if you get pain meds make sure they are not in your control. there are several post on here now of those that have relapsed. if you take the plls as prescribed you are still clean from abuse, that is your goal. as you know i just had surgery, my goal was to get off quick and use less than prescribed. my doc told me it was not unusuall to be using pain meds 6 months after this surgery!!!!WHAT? no, i am an addict, that would be the death of me lol....i took them 5 days, 1 less per daythan prescribed....flushed the rest. so yeah i am still 100+ days clean. good luck i know it hurts
well hopefully they can do the root canal ASAP and your pain should go away the same day! You may need to be on antibiotics for a couple days first though before they do the root canal. Thats how it always was with me anyways. They like to clear the infection up in the tooth first before they go messin with it. THe good news is, usually after a couple doses of antibiotics, the pain subsides as well because its the infection that is causing the pain. Good luck to you. I know how HORRIBLE tooth pain can be. Ive had lots of teeth problems my whole life and have had some doozy of toothaches in my time! I still remember the worst one ever-- the pain went straight up into my SKULL just on 1 side of my head and it felt like my skully was literally being split in half with an AXE, for real. It was awful. I couldnt fuinction, couldnt even think the pain was so bad (and ironcially this was many years ago, and I didnt even have a single type of pain pill to take for it, i just laid in bed in agony with it and took nothing more than regular tylenol!! ) Hope you feel better soon!
I am sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. Tooth pain is horrible!! I will say a prayer for you. I hope you can get it fixed fast and get right back on track!! Do not let it get you down too bad! Hope it goes away soon. Good luck at your appointment.
