Thanks for the replies.
Even though I would be switching from one Narc to another do you think I would experience W/D's because of the much lower dose?
As for the Alchol I stopped drinking 3 years ago after a nasty scare right after I got out of the hospital. After reading this post I now I know what caused it. I was on the Kadian then. That is probably what caused my problems with the morphine in the first place. I NEVER drank excessively IMHO. I would drink a few beers after dinner while I watched the news. Never more than a six pack and only 2-4 times a week. I was going through about 1 case of beer per week. Some may call that excessive but I did not. My story begins one night after dinner only about a 3 weeks after my release from the hospital. I had NOT been drinking at all due to a very serious Cellulites Infection I was battling due to an epidural catheter that was implanted in my spinal canal. I was told that if I drank it would kill the anti-biotic's I was taking. Anyhow after I finally beat the infection I resumed my normal routine. I had only about 2 beers and a 50 MG Kadian. I started to feel very faint I got so dizzy I fell down. I then started to sweat profusely and then shivered like I was in a block of ice. I was pale white like a ghost. I started to panic as did my family. This went on for what seem like forever but was really only about 1/2 hour or so. I then regained my composure and my color and have NOT touched a beer since. Until now I never put it together. I was told by my Dr. that I had a bad reaction to the Kadian. I was a new patient at that time and I don't think he realized that I had already been on it for a few weeks prior, and I did not tell him about the alcohol. I would have but again I never put it together and he did not ask. He attributed it to a morphine reaction and hence switched my prescription to the OXY's. It's been like that ever since. I still can't figure out why the HIGH DOSE of oxy. I was on 50 mg Kadian and about 3-4 10 mg of MS/IR at the time of the switch. Now that have been educated by you all I realize that this was a drastic increase. At the time I was dumb and was just following Dr.'s orders. If I knew then what I know now I would have thought twice about accepting all that OXY.
Thanks for the help.
You All are AWESOME!
yes there tends to be less abuse with the kadian .....The one thing you have to be very careful of if you go back on the kadian it is very dangerous with any alcohol.
Kadian is just 50mg morphine in a extended release formulary....more people seem to get in the narc problems with the oxycontins........shouldnt be any w/d's going from one narc to another...............
After reading this forum I have just now realized that the amount of meds I take are excessive. I was hospitalized from my original injury 3 years ago for 10 days. While there I was only given IV pain meds. I'm not even sure what they were. When I was released I was immediately started on 50 mg Kadian and 10 mg MS/IR's I had major problems with the Morphine so within a month my Dr. Switched me to the Oxy's/ Roxy's. I was started on 80mg Oxys 2 x a day and 15mg Roxy's 4 x a day. I've only recently (in the last 4 months) been upped to the Roxy 30 mg 3 x a day. I'm now wondering why I was started on such a HIGH DOSE of medication. They did not leave much room for any tolerance build up. Maybe they did not anticipate long term use. Has anyone ever heard of Kadian and is it safer than Oxy's? My Dr. said that eventually I would get used to it but I was not willing to try at the time. Maybe I should consider switching.Does anyone know if I will experience W/D's from the Oxy/Roxy if I switch back to the Kadian? Anyone have any thoughts on this?
That is a scary high amount of stuff your taking. I kind of agree with you and your doctor, that you may have a difficult time finding a new doc. to prescribe those amounts. Thats scary to me ....if you read the pain management forum ....this happens all the time when a change of doctor is required.
good luck.
Nauty...........
I really can't ssay wether the levels were down or up through the urine test, however the amount of damage being done to your liver and kidneys has to be amazing. Most of us here will tell you that your body will lie to you to get you to take more and more of the pills. It is a horrible cycle the more pills the more pain hence more pills then more pain and so on. I am not saying that you are not in pain but if you started slowly tapering down you would probably find that you actually need less of them than you would imagine. Again just a thought, meaning no disrespect or insult to you. Just speaking from experience. Good luck and God Bless
