Getting healthy again?

I'm on day 10 now and I'm starting to feel better, I've gained about 50lbs through all this drug abuse and then the methadone program... So now I really want to focus on getting myself healthy. I have no exercise program at all for 2yeara now, I'm lazy because of the pain and drugs. Any advice on how to start? Where to get help? I think that if I start to get in shape, I will be happier with myself and will keep me from relapsing again. This is my 2nd time successfully getting clean and I don't think I'd be able to go through this again. I have asthma so I can't go all out and start running or anything. Has anyone suffered from panic attacks after they got off drugs? That's a problem I have as well, when my heart starts beating fast, I panic. Does it get better? Thank you for any advice and support! I probably wouldn't be at day 10 without you!

I exercise every day, don't smoke, and eat a vegetarian diet.Exercise helps me Immensely more than anything I do for my mental health and mood. After all my brain is part of my body and the things that are good for my body are also good for my brain.Just start slow and work your way up.Nothing bad can come of this

Hayls, Everyone is different but for me I know feeling good physically goes along way with helping with my recovery. After a stressful day, instead of thinking of the pills, my release is to get a good workout in. Sounds like you are limited in what you can do, but even just going for a long walk should help. Eating write and exercising makes me focus on a task, and when you start to actually see and feel a difference, it is very rewarding. I also started mixing yoga into my routine once a week, and it really does help get rid of built up stress and can teach you breathing techniques that may help with the panic attacks. Good luck and keep doing what you are doing!

A comment on your post. Getting healthy is great; we are able to do so much when our brains aren't in a fog. However, feeling good about yourself because you've lost weight and are fit won't keep you from relapsing. You've probably covered all this in another post, but since this is your second time at the dance what are you doing different? If you don't have a plan then you may be setting yourself up for a fall. After detox we all want normal, or at least better NOW. Be careful; work on the mental side of recovery, then on your physical self.

Thank you! I was thinking about starting yoga, I really used to enjoy that and going to the gym! Maybe I'm jumping ahead of myself but I just can't wait to start living again!

Oh yeah yoga is great even if you can't do very much.  I have a routine that was given to me by my old yoga instructor posted on my photos in my profile.  Very beginner oriented.

It really will start to turn around soon.  I found that the two week mark brought some very noticeable and positive changes, and it will for you too...just keep looking forward.  As far as weight, I have gained about 20 pounds and its driving me nuts.  One thing I used to do when I was in treatment was yoga.  I have again started and its helping with stress as well, which might help to ease your lingering wd symptoms...

The first thing I would recommend doing on self control and trying to make sure your eating what you need and 3 to 4 times a day, just small meals.  It will help your digestive system and help with constipation if that is a problem.  Everyone is different and some foods may interfere with medicines like grapefruit but you can check your meds for food interactions on the web, if you are on meds.  Here is my diet but it took a long time until I could make this a habit and it took a lot of self control:
In the morning some fruit and or oatmeal
Lunch: a sandwich with whole grain bread
Dinner: vegetables, some type of meat and a tall glass of milk
I also try to have fish two times a week, not fish sticks YUK
Anyway with a healthy diet you should find yourself less tired and more energetic then you can focus on going for a few walks a week, if possible.  I have asthma too so I feel your pain.  I always take my inhaler with me just in case and don't start out going too far until you know your limitations.
