I have been tapering down from oxycodone (from a high of 80mg after back surgery). I'm at 2.5mg/day now (basically 1/4 of a 5mg pill every twelve hours). I am 30 minutes from my next scheduled dose and I feel no withdrawal effects at all so my body has already adjusted to this dose. I'll probably skip this dose and see if I can make 24 hours, and if I still have little to no symptoms I'll probably quit altogether.
So to answer your question, tapering does indeed work and will dramatically minimize the withdrawal symptoms. Every time you "taper down" you can expect some minor symptoms (in my case a little dizziness, slight headaches, and very minor diarrhea) until your body adapts to the lower dose. I found I adapted fairly quickly (within two doses or so).
I was on oxy for just 3 months and I wasn't actually addicted (just dependent) so your experience could be radically different. Best wishes and good luck!
