Wow, I never heard of Vivitrol, but it sounds like Suboxone on steriods to me. Every one has their path (mine was methadone, and a mistake) so I am not the one to judge. But I think ultimately anything you take to quit taking something will eventually have to be dealt with as well. Either, I wish you the best with your recovery.
What I meant to say was precipitated w/d instead of full blown w/d. I defineatly know how bad can feel as I went through them for 7 days a few months ago. And it was terrible.
There's really no way to avoid w/d's once you quit c/t. The Antabuse & Vivitrol simply keep you from wanting, and negate the mind altering effects if you DO take/drink something.
W/d's are different for everyone, so I'm not sure how you're defining "full blown" w/d's, but when you quit, you're going to" get diarrhea, restless legs when you try to sleep, trouble sleeping, sweats, extreme fatigue (absolutely no motivation to get up and out of bed), lower back pain, to name a few of the w/d symptoms you may encounter. Just imagine the worst case of the flu you've ever had, and multiply it by 4.
As I said, it's different for everyone, but if you can tough out the hell of w/d's for 2-3 days, I promise you you'll be better for it.
Just about the ONLY way to avoid w/d's (at least, SEVERE w/d symptoms) is to taper. If you come clean to your doctor, and tell him/her what your problem is and that you want to get clean, he/she will prescribe a strict taper program that you must adhere to. It involves daily reduction of nacotics, slowly reducing your intake. When you finally/completely stop taking anything you will experience SOME w/d symptoms, but not nearly as severe as quitting c/t.
That's about all the help I can lend on this particular topic.
I wish you the best of luck, whatever you decide to do.

Ok I understand it helps with staying sober by reducing cravings but does it put you into full blown w/d if you are using?
There's Antabuse (Disulfiram) for alcoholics, and Vivitrol (Naltrexone XR Inj). Vivitrol can be used for drinkiers as well, but it works just as well for pill-poppers. Dosn't necessarily reduce the withdrawl symptoms, but it DOES stop you from craving and reduces your 'want' of mind altering substances.
There maybe a drug for w/d but the prescription for addiction is looking inside and admitting you have an addiction, accepting help with your addiction and working through your addiction to find sobriety. With all that being said, detoxing is hard but staying sober is harder. Education and aftercare is key in staying sober it helps you through the mental part of addiction. So as far as a once a month shot for addiction I don't know staying sober is a lifetimes work.---Rick
There is a member here who just got this shot recently for the first time. I will message her and let her know you have a question. Not sure if she will post today so be sure to keep checking back over the next few days.
