percocet psychosis

Ive been taking percocet on n off for 5 years. More on than off.  I use to subsitite with norco, 10mg when id run put pf my 30  month supply of 120 after 2 weeks.  I try to taper, and it helps.  I recently went up to 6 a day of 10/325.  O have 3 left with one ready to inhale for the am.  I am coming out of a drug imduced psychosis episode.  I've gotten them before, but this was the worst.  Im taking 2 mg xanax which has brought me back almost 99%. I have a few ultrams to help, but ive been tapering for 7 days, i had 4 today vs the 20 i was taking.  Will the nervousness/psychosis come back?

There is so much you write about that's VERY alarming.  Both the symptoms of this "psychosis" and also what you're taking together.  You're flirting with serious danger!!

Do you do any other drugs, or take any other medications besides the ones you've shared here?  I'm just guessing, but I have a feeling that these psychotic episodes you mention aren't caused by the opiates.  They may exacerbate the issue, but I would be shocked if they were the causative factor.

What you describe sounds more like something one would experience after abuse of stimulant type drugs, like cocaine, meth, or Rx drugs like Adderral.  OR it sounds like it could be the onset of symptoms related to a mental illness.  How old are you?

PLEASE please get the help of a doctor.  You're taking one pill to combat symptoms of another, and then on top of that, you're experiencing these scary symptoms.  To make matters even worse, you're trying to self medicate away the symptoms of whatever psychotic episodes you may be having.  That's ALL bad.  You REALLY are at high risk for all kinds of bad things.   Please get to see a doctor who can thoroughly evaluate you, and help you.

Best to you!

Good morning momzof3 :)

There are other (non-addictive drugs) besides benzos to control high blood pressure. Clonidine is one that springs to mind. It just occurred to me that your sleep deprivation could be causing your audial hallucinations. I encountered these when coming off Methadone & benzos (which I used to help with sleep during detox though they only ended up complicating matters/making it worse.) As you probably know, Xanax is the strongest benzo out there & a dangerous drug. Here's a link: Check out the symptoms re: psychosis, irritability, hallucinations, etc. :

You sound like you're on the fence about whether or not to make a commitment to stop this terrible tapering cycle you're caught in. You've got a lot to live for, my friend & we're never guaranteed another go-round. I've lost a lot of friends to drugs & sometimes wonder why I survived. Please, I know that you feel stuck right now, but if you really want to, there is a way out of this dark place you're in. The 'lid of the box' has been off the whole time -- just look up & start telling yourself that it's possible! Would you be willing to go to a Dr., explain what's going on & design a proper taper? Dare to imagine this!  You & your kids deserve better!

We're here & we're in your corner. :)

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out!

Lack of sleep on opiates is unusual although some folks do report feeling more 'up'/wired on them. For instance, were you taking the benzos or Ultrams BEFORE your taper? Do you drink? I ask because these are the more likely culprits in a 'psychotic' episode. Fits of rage don't necessarily indicate psychosis. They might be from a very natural anger at yourself/your situation. (I know that I've felt like that at times.) Sometimes a compromised liver can also cause these episodes. Also, dangerous behaviors & the feelings of hopelessness that lead to suicidal ideation aren't rare when it comes to long-term &/or heavy opiate use & aren't necessarily considered psychotic.

I would strongly urge you not to take Ultram as it's addictive & very difficult to kick. There are plenty of people to testify to that here. It may not be classed as an opiate but the same set of symptoms present when you come off of it. In addition it has a 'benzo-like' component to it which complicates the kick. (i.e. it's said to be like kicking opiates & benzos at the same time. Nasty!) Benzos really interfere with proper sleep after a while. Discontinuing them is rough. I've kicked both & it was rough.

Could you possibly go to an Addiction Specialist or knowledgeable Dr. in order to design a safe & less stressful/more effective taper? If you're truly concerned about psychosis & your state of mind, it might be a good idea to see both a psychologist & Dr. to sort this all out. It would also give you some 'local' support & a positive direction to pursue. I'd like to second Motye's question: 'What do you want to do? Are you ready to take your life back?'

I know you're in a rough & confusing place right now & it might be difficult to think & see clearly. We're here for you. Please, keep posting. :)

Are you alone in all this?  Looking at your name I'm going to assume your a mom....yes/no?  These psychotic episodes sound very dangerous?  Just wondering, you stated that your tapering, is it b/c your ready to quit?  Or are you just trying to lower your dose?  That seems life a lot of different medicines together, which I can't imagine is a good combination?  Not to be too blunt, but are you looking to die?  The combination of benzo's and Norco's, and Ultrams, and whatever else your taking (b/c I'm sure when you run low you use whatever you can get your hands on like I did) I believe is going to kill you!  Do your kids see you in this state? (again assuming you have kids)?  What do you want to do?  Are you ready to take your life back?
