Suboxone vs Meth - Can someone explain?

I am prescribed 3 20 mg Oxy's a day for spinal stenosis. Thing is I've become very addicted and do probably 4 a day and I snort them. I do suffer from incredible back pain because of the back problems but I do the oxys to kill pain - and get high. I am determined to get off them but I know I'll still need something for pain. Can methadone maintenance allow me to get off Oxys AND provide pain relief? Can subs do the same thing or is meth the better option for someone like me.

I have two young children that I'm determined to give a drug free mommy to for Christmas. I am going to call the local meth clinic today and ask some questions but I just hoped to be able to get a bit of information here.

I'm so sick of the Oxys. It's always the same - I get my script. Pay back half my script because I ''borrowed'' some, run out way ahead of when I'm due to get a refill, go and borrow and buy them--uggh. I'm tired of the cycle of stupidity I've gotten into here and want to live life free of oxys. Free of waking up and having to snort a 20 to even start functioning. But I DO really need pain relief. Spinal stenosis makes you feel a hundred years old. You wake up aching and it never goes away, just varies in intensity. Would meth allow me to both control the pain AND get free of oxys?

Please help me, I'm so confused here..

hey girlee...welcome to the forum...well as for your question ..methadone is a great
pain killer..it works on the pain reseptors but wont give you a high or buzz like the oxys it wont stop your behavior of snorting oxys.but if you you want to stop that by choice it will keep you from going thew withdrawals as well as keep your pain at a manageable level... going to a methadone clinic they wont put you on it for pain'
they will put you on it if you tell them your snorting oxys...I was in pain management
when I was put on it and because of my resistance to other treatments (shots in my spine) I was forced into the clinics ...I stayed on it for 6 1/2 yrs for pain in my back
slowly went from 40 mg to 150mg over the yrs and in the end I built up a tolerance to
it also and it quit working..so I desided to get off....thats where the problems come in with methadone it is a huge addiction to break free of...one of the worst im told
as for me it took 8 1//2 mo of tapering to get free of it..to say the least it was very difficult to break free of...with that said you may want to consider tapering off the oxys if you can if not and you wind up in a methadone clinic I would only use it for a very short time ...just long enough to break out of your current addiction to oxys
and then taper off as quickly as possible  as for using it for pain management I
wouldn't recommend that after doing it myself...its not worth the cost of the huge addiction it causes...as for back pain..im no stranger to that ether but I find as do many that my back pain is very manageable with otc drugs like motrin that dont seam to work wile your on the narcotics ..once off them they seam to do an ok job of managing pain...no one was more surprised by this more then me..I had been in pain management for over 16 yr if you count the pills as well as the methadone ...
so if I were you I would take a long hard look at your situation and use your own judgment methadone is a choice it dose have its benefits but it also has an evil side that you dont want to experence...ive got 31 days clean today and I still feel the side effects of it...and sobriety is so so worth it ..good luck and god bless ...Gnarly

Hi there.  Gnarly and I have both kind of been in the same situation with the methadone.  But I am a little different on my opinion.  I started methadone pills due to having two spinal surgeries and having lupus.  My doctor lost his license so I started the clinic.  I don't know where you are from but I can tell you it will be very expensive first of all.  Second of all, opiates seem to make your pain worse believe it or not.  When you don't have them, the pain becomes a lot more amplified.  There are some things I have read about that but can't remember the details of why right now.  I am coming off methadone completely in two weeks.  I have detoxed off of it before and it is a living nightmare.  Anyone will tell you it is ten times worse than heroin and lasts ten times longer to get off of.  My suggestion is PLEASE stay away from it.  The clinics are in it for money and will want you to go higher on your dose and you may end up staying there a lot longer than intended.  Same goes for Suboxone.  It's an evil drug to come off of.  Never been on it but have heard lots of stories about it on here.  I know how bad chronic pain is.  I live with it every day.  I've tapered so low on my methadone since I'm quitting that it doesn't help and after a while you will reach a tolerance level with it and have to keep going up so it's a never ending cycle.  I, like gnarly, have found that some otc pain relievers actually do help.  They never helped before because I was an addict and didn't want them to help and had to get the narcotics out of my system for them to even have a chance at being able to help the pain.  Please try to taper off the oxys or get low enough and cold turkey (it will S*CK tremendously), you will hurt but it is actually easier than methadone or suboxone detox.  Go to your doctor and make a plan to come off, he or she can give you some things like maybe clonidine, a mild muscle relaxer and an anti-inflammatory.  Just please put some thought into trading one addiction for another.  One that in my opinion, will put you in a worse situation.  Sorry to be so adamant or demanding about this but after what I have been through, methadone is the devil's drug to me.  There are a lot of other ways to get help for pain without narcotics and it will work.  When you decide you are going to stop the oxys and talk to your doctor about a pain treatment protocol, there are a lot of people on here that can really guide you through getting off the oxys.  I hope I don't sound harsh, I care about people like you because I have been in that position and still am really, my next and last detox starts soon, and I want the best for you.  It's all up to you.  You have to pray about it, make up your mind 100% and go for whatever you think is best.  If you decide on methadone or suboxone, we will all still be here to help you no matter what's going on.  This is what we are all about.  And gnarly is the absolute greatest and knowing what to do and being a kind, caring person.  I hope I can be there for you if you ever need me.  Please message me if you have any questions or send me a note.  I wish you the best....
