The best thing you can do to minimize suffering is to taper your dose gradually over several months. You will still get some withdrawal symptoms, especially at the end, but it will be much milder than if you just jump off and there are medications that can help with those symptoms. Common ones are clonidine, phenergan, and various sleeping pills. Benzos can also help. A good diet and exercise will also help the symptoms to an extent. Some herbal remedies even help.
