new to methadone

Hello all,new here and first post. I have been on oxycodone and oxycontin for hip and leg pain for about 2.5 yrs. I have ms and hip dysplasia. About 2 months ago I had enough of the pain pill cycle, and quit the oxycontin cold turkey. Now i am off the oxycodone as well, for three days now. However, I was started on 10mg of methadone 3x daily. The first 2 days were really rough, today seems to be the best so far.....Ok,so my question is, if I were to just stop the methadone right now, would I have horrible wd's?  I have read that methadone is a nightmare to get off of,and dont want to go down that road...so im wondering if I can just quit all drugs all together right now,it would be wonderful !!!!!  Thanks for any and all input, greatly appreciated

When you decide what you want the most, that's what your going to focus on doing. A lot of people get hung up going back and forth from one drug to another and build up tolerance and dosage until they figure out their in drug hell and want to stop more than anything else. That's when they stop.  However it's easier to stop the lower your dosage and the less time you've been using. I don't know if "scared" of being dope sick is the right word? It's human nature to take the path of least resistance, so instead of quitting it's easier to up dose, till it isn't. What you should be afraid of, is if you don't absolutely have to take this medicine, that you keep taking it. That's addiction. I'm not condescending in any way { I'm an addict}, just stating what I see as the truth. These narcotics operate in our heads and we don't see them working, they never rest, never stop. They [narcotics] want to continue controlling our lives, and will. It's just not going to get easier, the longer you wait. I guess I used to think I was immune or what, I'm not sure. I only used as directed by my doctor, which will really take control. I never had to go out looking, never ran out, So I methodically grew my tolerance up to [for me] an intolerable amount. Then that dosage [200mg day] was no longer effective for pain. Now What? I'm getting ready to jump off, after tapering down, to under 40mg. This is what happens, Of course there are exceptions, but that's the way it will go. I understand chronic pain, as do many people on this site. You are here probably because you already know, that continuing narcotics will create a hardship for you and your daughter, that will get worse, I think that's where the fear enter's. Anything worth having is worth working for, you can get free of this monster while it's medium size or as big as Godzilla. The choice's are yours. Best luck to you and yours and if you decide to stop, there's alot of support here from people that know exactly what your going thru.

Way to go prattski! That in addict world is like winning the lottery. And also, by coming back and sharing your fantastic results hopefully you'll inspire others to want the same thing. Now, you really should look into some aftercare to help you stay clean, I'm proud of you for getting that way. Now the trick is to stay clean. Do what ya gotta do to stay clean, you know better than to think it would be ok, to test the water. It's not. Congratulations, on a job well done! Looking forward to you celebrating your first month of wonderful sobriety!

HI well the methadone is a great pain killer but it comes with an awful price the addiction and a lengthy withdrawal ...right now it is blocking your oxy withdrawals it takes about 3 dats to build up enough in your system for it to fully work thats why you felt so bad the last 2 days...after being a methadone addict for 6 1/2 yrs I could never recommend it to any one now if you get off it now you wont face methadone withdrawals but theirs a good chance you will feel the oxy withdrawals ...I wish I had better news for you but there is no get out of jail free card with this stuff.....oxy withdrawals only last about a week methadone your sick for months we can walk you threw an oxy detox then you will no longer be chained to a pill bottle start by getting off the methadone and will go from there...the methadone will take around 3 day to come out of your system so hang in there good luck and God bless.....Gnarly

Welcome to the forum!  When you say it was rough, do you mean that you were drug free for a few days or was there no lapse between the oxy and the methadone? If you intention is to be drug free as soon as possible don't stick with that methadone for any amount of time. You are already concerned and should be. If you don't absolute "have to take" for pain the 3x ten mg's .... don't! If you don't cut back while your trying to decide what to do, you will have a 30mg "habit" to kick. Those "rough" feelings from not taking oxy, I believe are almost identical to what it feel coming off methadone although others say it's even worse. Seems like you wanna quit altogether, as you already know the amount taken plus the time consumed all adds to the difficulty of quitting. Best of luck!

Good morning,, Well the methadone you were prescribed actually dulls and nullify's the W/D symptoms from the oxy's.... I would recommend a week long taper of the meth, such as 30mg day to 25mg then 20mg  etc etc etc until 0 is reached,,You are new to meth so your tolerance is weak to it at this point, it should be fairly easy,,peace,,stay strong,,,Bugz

How long have you been on the Methadone? If you were able to stop taking oxycontin and oxycodon you WILL be able to stop the methadone. You may loose a little sleep and feel crabby but it sounds like you are going strong with getting off Pills altogether. If you have been on the Methadone for a long time, try tapering yourself off of it. Go down to two a day a and then one a day and so forth. That will help with any WD you may experience. Good luck!!
