Made it through use of Vicodin

This is not a question so much as a note of support for recovering alcoholics who need to go on narcotic pain relievers. I took Vicodin in large dosages (up to 8 a day) for pain from a ruptured cervical disc.  At about the 6 week mark the pain started to subside, so I took action: I cut my usage by half a tablet a day for five days, then cut it another half tablet, and continued to do this until I was off the drug.

I needed the drug.  The pain was terrible.  I called my sponsor right away and was reminded that I am not a doctor, so I should be transparent - let everyone around me know that I'm alcoholic and follow the doctor's instructions.  I focused on the pain and nothing else; consequently I never got caught up in taking the stuff for getting high, relieveing stress, etc.  I may also be blessed with a super high tolerance for drugs and simply never had a euphoric effect.  If so, it was the grace of God.  I any case, if your are on narcotics, use them as directed, and when it comes time to get off the drug, do so, slowly.

Good luck and Godd Bless!

Nice post.

Question:  Are you still drinking, or are in in recovery?  My reason for askig is because before my back surgery and on pain killers, and when I wanted to go out I wouldn't take my 6 pm dose because I figured I'd probably have a couple of beer over dinner.

I noticed how alcohol was truly the best painkiller for me.  But since I couldn't drink 24/7, I continued w/the pills and was so hooked.

Maybe you didn't get high because you didn't double dose?  Or triple dose, like most of us here has?
