Is my son lying to me

My son has admitted some oxycotin usage.  He now wants money for pills that will stop the craving for the oxycotin.  I can't remember the name.  Now, he wants money for a "drink" that will mask this pill so he can pass a drug test so he can get a job.

I feel as though it's just one lie after another.  Can any one help w/o knowing the name of the pill that supposedly stops the craving?  If necessary, I will get name of pill.  tks

as a mom of a son who used and a wife of a former addict. don't give him money it will only go toward drugs. i was a long time enabler. he will not beable to really keep a job longterm unless he is clean. my son between the ages of 16-23 only had jobs for 3 or so months at a time until he was clean. they dont have the motivation or desire
to keep a job especially if he lives with you.. u provide the basics that he needs. the suboxone is very expensive and just a crutch. he needs to stop using. needs support groups and to know that he is a lifelong issue. stop the insanity. but unless he really wants to stop it becomes a vicious life of lies and deceit.
been there, encourage him to seek help soon,
god bless,

It is only going to get worse unless he gets off RIGHT away.  I have had a norco (vicodin) habit for almost 4 years.  It messes up ur brain.  It makes u depressed unless you have it.  At least at FIRST.  What I would suggest is (and this may sound stupid but it's what I did).  I got off sub for one month but substituted with short acting opioids like norco and percocet.  But it's easier to Withdraw from vicodin than oxycodone, which is in percocet.  I'm on my third day clean and I feel like the world is open to me.  I have kids (one son and a goddaaughter.  My friend passed away from lung cancer at 37)  I am looking forward to getting a job and doing all kinds of things.  Why did he start?  Was he depressed?  I started after I got my teeth done then broke my hand and both my parents had recently passed away and my best friend was diagnosed around  all at the same time.  But they make you feel good at first then it just becomes a bad habit.  Tolerance becomes very high very fast!  So nip it in the bud.  Don't give him money.  He can't get a job right now.  He would have to use every day to even GO to work, and it would be more expensive to do THAT!  So have a sit down with your son, tell him what you have learned and give him all the support you can.  But he won't quit until he wants to.  But you don't have to support it while he does it!  He'll drain your bank account.   Lots of luck.  Opiates are the worst thing you can do.  Even worse than crack.

Hello Worried one..

I would not give him any money.. Rather I would offer to give him help to get clean..
Go to the doctor with him, find him a place to detox, help with the withdrawals.. but no money..

You know your son ... I am only playing devils advocate..

I went Cold turkey off Oxycontin about 5 weeks ago.. it was rough. but I can tell you that it was also motivational.. I don't want to do it twice. For me, going Cold Turkey was hard.. it was a major event in my life.. I feel like I have an investment now.. I cannot imagine relapsing and realizing that that horrible episode was a waste of time..

When your using drugs, you dont think its that serious.. Going cold turkey makes it clear that it was serious..

Good luck

Do you think you could get him to come on this forum? There are some wonderful people that can relate to him that may be able to help.
From what I have read, suboxone can be helpful but like jt said above, he must really want off of the oxy and be willing to fight. While taking suboxone if he does take an oxy it will block the effect. But if he goes a few days without the suboxone he could get that high if he took an oxy. So if I were you and you decide to go with suboxone I would monitor his intake. Sit there with him while he lets it dissolve under his tongue. Suboxone is an opiate itself but has less abuse potential but it can be abused so this would be another reason to monitor his use. Many people say sub should only be used as a last resort after trying multiple times to get clean. Every situation is unique though and it may be what your son needs.
Suboxone is used as a tool to get off of opiates. It is one of many tools. The other tools and the most important tools are aftercare. If you decide to help him with suboxone make him agree that he will go to NA meetings every day. It may also be helpful to get him in to an addiction therapist. Use every resource out there that you can find.
Hope this helped some. Hopefully since he admitted to you about his drug use shows that he really does want help. Maybe you could try and get him try cold turkey before trying suboxone. Once he stops taking the sub he will go through withdrawals from it and from what I have read they are much worse than oxy withdrawals. If he does go cold turkey the worst of the withdrawals usually last around a week or so and it starts to get a bit better after that. If he goes this route he will need so much support and encouragement from you though. I've been through withdrawals a few times due to being on and off pain meds due to a back problem and can tell you it is no walk in the park!
Here's a link about suboxone that may be helpful.

You search for doctors in your area that prescribe sub. Not all doctors have a license to prescribe it. It can be expensive and not all take insurance.
Best of luck to you. Please keep us updated on the situation so we are able to help. I'm sure more will come along that can give you some better information and advice than I gave.
