tapering down???

hey..

Ive been on methadone for just over a year n a half now. I was on 110ml at my highest but now i am on 70ml and want off this crap...
I would like to know what the best road is to take with comeing off.. Do i taper down?? if so by how much n how often do you think?? or should i try going into a 7 day detox programme???
I no its going to be hell but im more than ready to kick this addiction to the curb.
What works best for you? I was put onto methadone for a codeine phosphate addiction but was told nothing about meth n how  hard its meant to be to kick.
all advice would be welcome and much appreciated..

whatever way you get off this drug is ok, you must do whats best for you, and what you feel comfortable with, the aim is the same, to be free of this awful trap. a detox program if you can get a detox program, take it, i really wish you well, god bless, sudie

Im currently 34 days clean from methadone. I have done this with the help of some great people on this site. IT CAN BE DONE! you are right - you can't win with methadone.. you have realized this.  Get off it while you are still young. It will be great to get your life back.
Best wishes TEENA

so do you want to come off the methadone? i still think it ashame they used that route, but its done now, i know codeine ,or any opiate addiction is hard, and as you say, the paracetemol (acetamophen) is a killer for kidneys and stomaches. you can get your life back, keep posting, best wishes,    sudie.

hey...

When i was on codeine i detoxed off them many times as i couldnt get enough tablets to support what i needed so i was going to the pharmacy to get nurofen plus cos they have codeine in them, and i was taking 10-14 tablets twice a day and i started to get really bad kidneys, and to be honest the hospital said if i had of continued for maybe 6 months more i would have had complete failure in my kidneys and could have died... but fingers crossed they are okay now the damage was done but i think i got lucky only time will tell there..
so i mean methadone was a god save you could say but like i said in the other hand its turned my life upside down, i wont admit it to anybody but i feel in a really bad place right now all my dreams of joining the army or having a mixed martial arts career are all down the toilet right now i cant do either because i cant pass medicals none will accept me while on this meth crap n its took me to a dark place i never thought i could go to.. its a daily battle and a daily stress n i dont think im winning..
thanks for your support n advice

hi, i am also from the uk, and i am addicted to codeine, but clean for 95 days now, i certainly dont think you should have been put on methadone for codeine addiction, and for a year and a half! its madness, unless your dr. knows something we dont, how high a dose were you taking? and for how long, i was never  offered  methadone in spite of a few relapses, and i dont know anyone else from uk offered it either, i am glad you want to be off it, its good you have gnarlys help here, i really wish you well, take care.   sudie

Hey i have another quick question please..
do you think i should have ever been put on methadone???
I mean i was only on codeine painkillers??
If you think it was the right decision, then should they have told me about meth??
because they told me nothing about it..
do you think its right??

thanks

HI i was on methadone for 6 1/2yrs it took me 8 1/2 mo to taper off....thaqts 1/2 the time the clinic want to bring me off it.....just know you got to want it bad but if you do it can be done
it takes a great deal of discipline....I did it myself from my 2 week take homes tapering will go smoothly sometime then there will be times your hit with the withdrawals just stick to your taper
if you start getting dope sick stop for a few days and let your body ketch up ....you got to do this slowly and the lower the dose the slower you go look up the health pages to the lower right of the screen there is an article on tapering off methadone its a difficult road but one worth following....keep post with your progress and for support your going to need it but in the end you wont be wherein tha liquid handcuffs....I have helped a lot of people off this stuff if you have questions or just need to talk just message me good luck and God bless....Gnarly

hey debbie thanks for your reply..

I do have a drugs worker yes, but i think they just want me to stay on it forever! In the uk we don't have to pay for methadone which is good but in another way its bad because i think people take it for granted knowing there's always going to be a way out a free way out if things get hard.
Sounds like your husband has done really really well, i just hope i can kick this aswell. I have kicked a heroin habit cold turkey before but i hear meth is twice as painful and hard. is there any truth to this??
thanks.

hello and welcome. good for you that you want to be done with meth. my husband has been clean now for 13 months after a ten year habit. the withdrawal is definitely not pleasant and it is long, but you said you know it is going to be hell so that means you are ready. are you going to a meth clinic? if so you need to talk to your counselor and tell them you want to taper.you need to be firm with them and tell them you definitely want to detox because they want everybody to stay on a maintenance program. ( i hate the meth clincs) our tax dollars at work, sickening.  we arent allowed to suggest a taper schedule, but it needs to be done slowly. my husband tapered from 85 mg down to 20 mg and it took him 8 months. then he went cold turkey at 20mg. your body needs to adjust to each step down. there are others on this site who are tapering now or have done it.
blessings to you
debbie
