Hi James - I don't have any real personal experience with methadone or pain control options. I would like to start off by saying this - the fact that you are not an addict is great, I believe that gives you an advantage over this situation that you wouldn't have had if you were. That said - you've been on the opiates/benzos for a long time so addict or not, chemical changes have taken place in your brain over this time. You will go thru exactly what we addicts go thru - depression, anxiety, etc etc. Methdone synthetically creates chemicals in the brain, in great amounts, and affects how the brain functions naturally. Since you are putting these chemicals into your brain thru the methadone, your brain stops producing these chemicals on their own. When you stop taking the dones, your brain is left with NO production of these chemicals - it takes time for the brain to reach a 'normal' functioning point, it can actually take up to 2 years. Essentially, you will have a chemical imbalance, which can cause physical and psychological issues to take place. Since you have a preexisting mental health diagnosis being bipolar, these issues will become exaggerated. Be aware of this ahead of time so you can plan accordingly - maybe starting a mood stablizer and anti-anxiety med now will help you thru this. As far as the pain management aspect, would it not be better to have a doctor on board before you ct the methadone if you plan to go right onto the percs? Once you ct the dones, 14 days later you'll still be going thru wds... I'm not quite sure I understand why you're doing this, especially doing this and not telling the PM clinic... Either way - good luck with what you're doing!
i really think you should try to find an inpatient facility that specializes in dual-diagnoses
there is a way to detox at home but the bi=polar will complicate things, may end up costing you your life
i am willing to find a place that can take you, if you would like
Hi James.Just to give you a little history about me.I'm a recovering addict. My doc was vicodin.I was on methadone for a year and a half, never took anything else while I was on it.I went c/t off of 25 mgs and I have been totally clean from everything for a little over a year.I'm only telling you this because I don't know anything about your other meds so I don't know if they play a part in how you feel when you stop the methadone and I'm not sure if once you start taking the perks it will make a difference in how long you feel like a zombie.I hope that makes sense.Anyway to be totally honest the time it took me to feel totally not like a zombie anymore.I would have to say 2 months. At 6 weeks things were better for me,but it took a full 2 months before I felt as if the fog had lifted.Hope this helps.Good luck to you.I will keep you in my prayers and hope you get your pain under control. All the best...Kim
