son addicted to perks

My son has come to me and said he has a addiction to perks, I need to know how to help him. He's 20 years old and no insurance. He saids he is experiencing stomach pain, I afraid he will fold and keep doing it. Is there any help that he can get?

Slow breathing (less than ten breaths a minute is really serious trouble)
Small, pinpoint pupils
Confusion
Being tired, nodding off, or passing out
Dizziness
Weakness
Apathy (they don’t care about anything)
Cold and clammy skin
Nausea
Vomiting
Seizures
A lot of these signs of OxyContin addiction can make people think their friend is drunk. And they may be tempted to let them sleep it off, or tell their parents they had too much to drink. But don’t. The friend could go to sleep and never wake up.

I am in Canada and I have just detoxed from perks. I was addicted for 4 years and have been clean now for 22 days.  It wasn't easy, but the advice here you have been given is great.  I was fortunate enough to enter a detox centre and it was very helpful.  But since you have no insurance, you have to watch your son like a hawk.  There is a big chance he will relapse.  Listen to him and support him through it all.  The easy part is getting clean, the hard part is staying clean. 5-10 days of hell and then the mental part of it comes in to play. Search to see if there are any NA meetings in your area that you and your son can go to.
Take care

Hi,

Jsut to let you know, you are getting good advice here. I was on percs for a number of years and the first 5 days were terrible and then 5 days after that, I started to feel better by each day, I'm now at 100+ days and the best I've ever felt in years!

Your son can do this but HE has to want to do it too, which sounds like he wants to.Witnessing a friend's death due to drugs is very hard to go through and your son is seeing what drugs can do to him too. I like that list the one poster gave you....use it and have faith, be patient and be supportive.

I am so sorry for your anguish!!  If your son really wants off and you are there to help him you guys CAN do it together!!!  I say ARM yourself with everything you will need for his withdrawl FIRST!  PLAN AHEAD..... Here are some suggestions
1. Pepto Bismol
2. Ammonium
3. Xtra strength Tylenol and optionally (tylenol pm for night time)
4. Multi vitamins
5. Soup and crackers, mac and cheese  ect....
A comfy bed or sofa and maybe some good movies to pass time.  If his medical dr. will prescribe an anti depressent for anxiety or xanax something on those lines it will be very helpful too!
He is gonna feel like crapola for the first week  (IMO) maybe even lasting over 10 days. Make sure he gets lots of sleep and rest.  Watch him closely and try your best to be supportive and "listen" to him  when he is telling you how bad he feels.  Try to encourage him that it will get better everyday.... Hopefully he will remember the AWFUL withdrawl and will NEVER want to go through it again....
Good luck and I hope he does it!!! Stay strong, Kim

How long does the detox last he said he has to take zanx to sleep and keep his head straight, which tells me he can't do it on his own. I've never been addicted to anything so he's said I don't know what he is feeling or going through but it doesan't look to me like he's going to be able to kick it without help.  The fact he just told me again last night i he doesn't quit he knows it will kill him tells me he needs help. He just keeps making excuses to my husband and me everytime we say lets go get help. I even went as far as tellig him that if he has no desire to quit then I have no choice but to ask him to leave my house, I got two younger brothers at home.

He is saying he wants to quit. He has lost two friend this past year due to drugs. The first one he was staying the night and his friend was found dead the next day with my son right beside of him. I just don't know what to do to help him. I will send him this site and ask him to look at it. I don't know if he is telling me the truth when he saids he is doing it or not. How long does it stay in your system?

He really needs you now -- not to enable him but to be strong -- it will be tough on him but if you can convince him to cut off his supply - you will find that this will really cause him to want to complete the process of getting clean ---as long as there is a door open back to the drugs - he will most likely fail in his attempt.  Please keep reading all you can of the other posts on this board and keep posting -- try to get him to read and post.  It really does help.  Many, many on here have done this without insurance and have made it and reclaimed their lives.  He may think he is never going to get through it but he will -  All the best.
