What a long strange trip its been-But well worth it!
Today I celebrate 30 years from my last drunk/high!I remember where I was,who I was with and how I felt like a backed up sewer......nothing chemical was doing the trick anymore.Speedial...with the support of my brother and another recovering alcoholic I made the decision to go to inpatient.My brother and my mother were the only 2 family members who supported me.The remaining 6 basically said its your problem,we don't want to hear @ it and you're basically an embarasment to this family!My beloved mom who has Lewy Body Dementia since 1999 always remembered this date even up to a year ago!Now she doesn't know who I am anymore,but I know she'd be proud.I was not an easy patient in treatment,but a very good counselor broke thru my denial/rationalizing of my disease.I went to AA/NA...and took what I could use and left the rest!Many thanks to several oldtimers,now gone who helped me on my path.And many thanks to the recovering folks who post here and continue to give me MUCH food for thought/action.You Know Who You Are!

Thanks so much, ibizan! Yes, I too have watched movie portrayals of drunk characters and am thankful that I am no longer there! After 5 years, it's easier to remind myself of poor my quality of life and health was due to my excessive drinking habits. In detox, a counselor told us to "rewind and fast forward the tape" in our heads. For instance, when we feel like that first drink, fast forward the "tape" to many drinks ahead and how bad it will make us feel. rewind the "tape" back to when we first quit drinking and how hard it was to stop. I do that sometimes and it really helps me to keep things in perspective:)

I was watching Mad Men re-runs this morning as I usually do on Sunday.I never tire of watching them!I was watching Don Draper get drunk,fall in bed w/some drunken female,and be awoken by his ex-wife asking where he was for he was two hours late to pick up the kids.He didn't even know what day it was and had a horrid hangover to boot!Brought back memories of my drunken self 30 years ago and I said aloud"Aha,girl you ain't missin a thing":)!And neither are you Ex-Pat!:)Keep the sobriety train a going!The time you would spend relapsing is a drop in the bucket compared to the shame/remorse you'd have afterwards for having blown what u've already achieved!
Yes, you are right! Life is so much better! Very inspirational to hear about your 30 years sober! Makes me want to continue past my 5 years and keep on going:)
Oh my wonderful, crazy friend.......Where do i start? I cant even begin to tell you what an inspiration you are to me, how important you are to me and how proud of you i am. I thought i was doing pretty good when i first met you, little did i know how much i was missing. You have shown me the real value in life. It has nothing to do with material things, it is all about who we are and being comfortable in our own skin. You have shown me to keep it simple and to just roll with it. Your love for all the 4 leggeds is so awesome. I have so enjoyed that. I know your mom is proud of you but she just cant express it now. You are truly an angel my friend, to me, all the people that know and love you and last but not least, the 4 leggeds~

Congratulations on 30 years!!! (I missed this on the 22nd) I always love what you have to say on this forum. I enjoyed reading your story. Meeting people like you in recovery and listening to what you have to say about what it was like and what it's like now, is what keeps me clean and sober.

I was deeply hurt, both physically and emotionally, by my Mother but somehow I always knew that it was the alcohol that was our enemy. My Mother died an alcoholic and throughout Her lifetime, She was only sober for a 3 month period. It made me feel like FINALLY I met my Mother!! and I will always be grateful for that 3 months. You can have no idea how much respect I have for You with 30 YEARS of recovery. I wish my Mother could have known You here.
