hi. the first few days can be especially tough but it does get better. it would be to your advantage to check out aa as there are usually lots of meetings and related activities this time of year. and as konyha indicated, seeking medical attention would be a good idea as alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening. the last time i stopped i had a seizure while i was driving and it was a miracle i didn't get hurt any worse than i did or hurt anyone else.  this occurred at the end of the first week so be careful!  best wishes--gm

The hammer probably will fall but it doesn't have to land on your head.

While your post is not phrased in the form of a question, the responsible and likely response is to see a doctor for a pysical and for help easing  your alcohol withdrawal and get yourself to an AA meeting or alternative support group whose members have experienced what you are going through and help you through it

I am no fan of marijuana maintenance but having quit some things cold turkey and others with help, I am no fan of the cold turkey approach. It is dangerous in some cases and in others can lead one back to drinking/using. Not for lack of wanting to change but to get rid of the physical &/or mental clawing need that can crop up out of nowhere.

While there was no mention of the holidays or people in your life, you might want to avoid overly "festive" or tempting situations right now. This fairly intuitive observation may not be as easy as it sounds since you cannot let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely, tired or bored. Physical activity may be your saving grace right now.

What is your daily routine like since you retired? Going from being pretty busy to no structure whatsover is a recipe for boredom. Worse, more time on your hands can lead down that road of wondering what your life will be like without alcohol. Every day. Forever.

Recovery doesn't really work that but without something to fill the void it may seem so. When I look back, I am still sometimes amazed at how much virtually everything I did was centered around alcohol and/or drugs - especially toward the end.

Hang in there
